This individual will lead the Dairy Plant staff with quality and safe production and distribution of dairy products, for consumption by the Cornell Community, utilizing equipment and technologies at the Cornell Dairy Plant and serve as lead on quality assurance, sanitation and academic programs and training coordination. Responsibilities will involve overseeing the Dairy Plant food safety and laboratory programs and acting as backup production lead for the 3-5 regular staff working during the same shift. In addition, this individual will coordinate and provide support and services for research, instruction, and extension programs of the Department of Food Science, particularly those related to the procurement and processing of dairy products.


Lead, guide and assist (as required) dairy plant staff in the safe production of fluid products (including milk and juices) as well as manufactured products (ice cream, yogurt, cheese, and pudding) while strictly adhering to all protocols, rules, regulations, and guidelines for quality and safe food. Oversee food safety documentation programs and train staff in proper protocols.

This position is a full-time position requiring independent action and the ability to serve as a mentor to other staff. Work days and work times vary throughout the year. Work hours may vary from 5:30 am to 2:00 pm to 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Work schedule may vary from Monday through Friday and include Saturday and Sunday when deemed necessary, or immediate response is required.


This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of extension dependent on funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of 3-5 years of experience and/or training (college, trade school or food processing work experience) working in dairy production or dairy processing.
  • Prior experience cleaning and sanitizing production or processing equipment.
  • Laboratory experience a must.
  • Must have previous experience working with and developing a food safety plan and HACCP, sanitation and product testing programs.
  • HACCP (or equivalent) training course required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all required licenses including; but not limited to Milk Receivers Permit, and Appendix-N License.
  • Must also have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Above average computer knowledge and data entry procedures, with a strong focus on MS Outlook, Word, Excel and Access program skills.
  • Strong math and record keeping skills.
  • Experience developing food safety documentation and written procedures strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with staff, students, faculty and customers.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently to accomplish required tasks to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Must be personable, flexible, and be able to multi-task in a fast paced industrial-type setting.
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills and takes pride in their work.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide-range of coworkers, faculty, and general public.
  • Must be a self-starter, interested in learning about the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs. Ability to work overtime when necessary.
  • Proven ability to lead team in completion of tasks/assignments in an efficient, safe and timely manner while complying with Federal Health and Safety Regulations for the production of food products.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in an agricultural field. Experience working in and around a university research setting. Prior supervisory and mentoring experience. Safe Quality Food, or equivalent, training.
