Ithaca College MECHANIC - STRUCTURAL - 2ND SHIFT in Ithaca, New York

Job Summary:

Perform a variety of entry level skilled tasks involved in building maintenance; participate in providing structural, basic lock work, electrical, plumbing, heating ventilating & air-conditioning (HVAC) and preventive maintenance of campus facilities and systems to ensure efficient and continuous operation. Periodically serve as a member of the Structural team on-call rotation. The position is also considered to be essential during emergency situations and is subject to being requested to report to work.

Supervision:

This position reports to and will receive day-to day direction, guidance and supervision from the Structural Supervisor. This position may require additional guidance from various Master Mechanics or Master Technicians as appropriate. This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as point of contact for department during second shift. Respond to emergent needs identified by campus community members and the Office of Public Safety.

  • Provide assistance with minor repairs and the maintenance of buildings, systems and equipment.

  • Perform duties and responsibilities congruent with departmental goals, energy conservation and in support of institutional goals.

  • Read and follow blueprints, building codes, and specifications to determine methods of repair. Compile a material/parts list.

  • Prepare, patch, finish and maintain surfaces within buildings.

  • Operate a vehicle and various equipment.

  • Assist in ensuring safe keeping of vehicles, tools, and other equipment.

  • Participate in making minor repairs to keep equipment operational and inform supervisor of all equipment needing major repair work.

  • Comply with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures and the maintenance of a clean work area.

  • Develop and maintain a cooperative working relationship with the campus community.

  • Participate in review and evaluation of existing modes of operation and recommend methods for increased efficiency and cost reduction.

  • Participate in workshops, seminars, training sessions and staff meetings as directed.

  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

High school diploma and a minimum of 2 years or 4,000 hours of work experience in the construction trades (carpentry, masonry, painting, etc). Good verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently with minimal supervision, ability to lift and carry 80 lbs., ability to climb a ladder, and the experience and ability to operate power/hand tools. A valid Driver’s License and adherence to the policies set forth by Office of Risk Management required.

Work Environment:

Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor/outdoor environment. The incumbent must be able to operate power/hand tools used in day-to-day operations and is required to ensure use of ventilators and respirators in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications as needed. The incumbent may be required to use scaffolding, lifts, climb ladders, and stand for long periods of time while using power/hand tools and equipment.

This position is 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.

Hiring Rate:

$23.06 per hour.
