About Benefit Services

BSA is comprised of approximately 30 - 35 employees and is divided into five units: Medical Leaves Administration, Benefits Analysis Team, Retirement and Financial Education, HR Services and Transition Center, and finally, Health & Welfare. Health & Welfare administers over 30 benefit plans and manages 14 vendors for endowed and contract college staff and faculty.


The Opportunity

Join our dynamic team as a Benefits Associate where you will oversee the day-to-day operations of our smaller Health & Wellness (H&W) Plans and manage related cases. Your role will involve close collaboration with vendors and the Benefits team, playing a vital part in achieving our department and university goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan Management: Take responsibility for the day-to-day operations of smaller H&W Plans, ensuring smooth and efficient management of related cases.
  • Vendor Collaboration: Maintain close and collaborative contact with assigned vendors to ensure effective plan administration.
  • Communication Updates: Update, create, and review communications for respective plans, coordinating mailing and website updates for all H&W notices, reports, newsletters, etc.
  • Financial Transactions: Process most accounts payable and receivable transactions for the unit, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Benefits team to achieve department and university goals, including vendor/case management, plan design, federal and state compliance, event planning/attendance, and process improvement.
  • Provide temporary backup support to team members during absences, ensuring seamless operations.
  • Other Duties: Perform other position-related responsibilities as assigned.

This is a non-exempt, full-time (39 hours/week) endowed position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position follows a hybrid work arrangement that includes 1-2 days in office per week. This hybrid work arrangement is subject to change at any time. Typical work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.


What You Need

We are looking for a team member who is detail oriented, timely, efficient, and organized. Additionally, you will:

  • Hold a degree in Human Resources, Human Services or a related field, with 2-3 years of experience in the benefits-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Have superb communication and customer service skills are required.
  • Work effectively specializing in benefit matters with team members, external contacts and employees.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a busy office and remotely with a focus on customer service activity, plan administration, and vendor management.
  • Utilize outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Work with confidential information, such as personal health information.
  • Exercise independent judgment and decision-making in responding to high-priority situations.
  • Be flexible and adaptable, working well with shifting priorities and within a team environment.
  • Take initiative to help and assist when the occasion arises.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe/pdf.
