As part of SCL, Athletics and Physical Education houses the John T. Oxley Equestrian Center as a part of its robust program.

The OxleyAnimal Attendantwill work in coordination with the Oxley Equestrian Center Manager and/or Lead Animal Attendant to support the daily operations of the equestrian center and its approximate 60 horses. The responsibilities of this position include serving as the on-duty lead for temporary and student employees in the absence of the Manager and/or Lead Animal Attendant with primary focus on animal care and barn maintenance. Responsibilities include distributing feeding grain, hay and water to the horses, leading horses to and from paddocks, cleaning and bedding stalls, dumping water buckets, sweeping barn aisle ways, scrubbing and refilling water troughs. Additionally, this role will be responsible for observing, and reporting to their supervisor, horses for abnormal behavior or possible health issues, assist in following health treatment plans to administer oral medications, apply topical medications, apply standing wraps and bandages, and/or potentially other treatments as needed. This position will also assist with managing general barn responsibilities as described above.


This is position is part of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The current rate of pay is listed in the collective bargaining agreement here: https://hr.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2023-04/uaw.pdf and starts at $20.95/hour.


Required Qualifications:

  • Formal training in related field related, HS Diploma with 6 months to 1 year of experience working in horse management or in an animal care facility or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Training in basic animal care procedures, record keeping, recognizing health concerns is essential.
  • Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail required.
  • Ability to lift more than 50 pounds (handling feed, hay and other bulk supplies).
  • Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions and be exposed to loud noises, dusty conditions, animal waste and odors.
  • Patience and compassion for animals and their well-being is a must.
  • Must be able to become CPR/AED certified.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience operating a small RTV and/or tractor, or willingness to learn operating these machines.
