LifePoint Health Infection Control-Employee Health Nurse Full Time 1.0 in Ishpeming, Michigan

Responsible for developing, planning, implementing and organizing a variety of education activities including individual, department and hospital wide programs. Serves as a consultant, facilitator, change agent and leader. This position supports clinical department leadership.

The Infection Preventionist is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation and reporting of hospital acquired infections, (HAI); educating employees about infection prevention; and the development of health system policies and procedures to insure rigorous infection control standards that meet JCAHO, OHSA, Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), APIC and other nationally organized agencies recommendations and requirements.

Employee Health

Follows established policies and procedures, objectives, safety standards, and sensitivity to confidential information.

Complies with Federal and State law and accrediting and licensing agencies at all times, to incluee but not limited to, the Joint Commission and federal compliance regulations.

Develops/coordinates orientation of new employee and transferred employee with active on-going involvement in the orientation process and continuing education materials.

Develops, manages, and coordinates education programs and conducts training related to the needs of the organization including State, Federal, and accreditation mandatory programs.

Works closely with Patient Safety Officer and responds to identified system changes or other identified needs to promote quality and patient safety.

Works closely with Quality director in developing and maintaining the quality program and the education of staff.

Assists in managing data collection to evaluate organizational outcomes and submits accurate data in a timely manner as required by regulatory agencies; or as part of any volunteer/collaborative initiative.

Assists in implementation of department quality initiatives and analysis of outcome data.

Analysis shares and assists the interpretation of outcome data with appropriate staff, medical staff, and customers. Facilitates any action as indicated for noted undesirable data and/or negative trends.

Facilitates teambuilding and leadership development in assigned areas.

Responds to change in nursing practice and develops programs to support those changes.

Maintains flexibility when managing multiple roles and responsibilities.

Leads committees, work groups and/or projects related to the implementation of educational activities.

Teaches content as needed and/or assigned within clinical expertise to facilitate orientation, staff development and /or safe practice.

Performs managerial duties as needed, to support day to day activities, i.e., Kronos, daily productivity, etc.

Responsible for planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of continuing education activities as appropriate to various accrediting bodies, as assigned.

Complies with continuing education accrediting body requirements. Participates as instructor in specialty courses as assigned.

Is a subject matter expert in area of expertise. Develops education programs for clinical and non-clinical staff. Maintains and evaluates these programs on an ongoing basis.

Provides consultation to department on managers and staff on the education process, job competencies, and accrediting agency requirements.

Maintains clinical knowledge in assigned areas and active involvement with orientation, on-going education and quality audits and initiatives.

Maintains working knowledge of learning management systems and other data management systems in the department.

Promotes collaborative relationships among health care professionals in the region.

Assists in the maintenance of employer education records for all disciplines.

Assists in department budget preparation; contains expenditure within budget.

Infection Preventionist

Apply epidemiologic principals and statistical methods to identify target population, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies.

Conduct on-going surveillance using Center of Disease Control (CDC) infection criterial, documentation, and investigation of nosocomial infections through review of admission diagnoses, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation requests, and post-discharge surveillance.

Assess environmental control in collaboration with Plan Operations staff through surveillance of water supply systems as needed, air pressure relationships for high risk environmental monitoring.

Conducts environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas.

Participate in investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreaks utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consultation with Infectious Disease Committee, county/state public health departments, and when necessary in consultation with the Center for Disease Control. Report epidemiologically significant findings to appropriate customers.

Evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifies as necessary.

Report all in-house patients with communicable disease to the country and/or state health department and maintain appropriate records. Compile and interpret surveillance reports to Infection Control Committee and any additional committees as deemed necessary.

Collect data in support of epidemiological studies of specific problems or problem areas to determine the source of the program and make appropriate recommendations.

Participate in quality/performance improvement activities by assessing, monitoring, and measuring nosocomial infections and evaluating outcomes on a continuous basis.

Assist in the organization of regularly scheduled Infection Control Committee meetings and dissemination of recommendations hospital-wide.

Plan, organize, develop and implement educational programs for all hospital employees including administrative and ancillary services which convey specialized knowledge and skills to increase employee awareness of existence of nosocomial infections; techniques for avoidance and preventative measures to provide a safe environment for hospital employees and patients.

Develop appropriate informational materials at appropriate level of understanding and need.

Serve as knowledgeable and available resource on infection control practices and policies to patients, families, staff and health system employees.

Participate in continuing educational activities at the department, state, and national levels to promote personal growth and maintain a current knowledge base commensurate with latest research and scholarly knowledge.

Maintain compliance with national standards and regulating bodies such as JCAHO, CDC, OSHA, FDA, and APIC.

Develop and update isolation techniques and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice, and rules.

Participate in maintaining policies and procedures which provide for a program of preventative medicine for hospital personnel to include establishment of policies and procedures relating to exposure to infectious diseases and prevention of cross-contamination.

Maintain a knowledge base of current infectious prevention and control information through peer networking, internet access, published literature and professional meetings.

Actively seek ways to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and participate in professional development opportunities.

Completes annual educational requirements.

Minimum EducationRegistered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse

*Minimum Work Experience *3 years of nursing experience required.1 year of experience in infection prevention preferred OR coursework (i.e. NC SPICE or APIC ICE 101) in infection prevention preferred.3-5 years of recent clinical experience with ongoing ability to demonstrate mastery of relevant clinical skills. Sufficient previous experience in adult education.

Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. Licensed as a Registered or Licensed Practical Nurse through the State of Michigan.

Basic Life Support-Health Care Provider

Basic Life Support-Health Care Provider Instructor within 3 years of accepting or transferring in to the position.
