Business Solution Architect

The Business Solution Architect plays a crucial role in driving business success by supporting strategic planning and technical innovation. This individual works closely with business leaders to envision, define and align Construction Industries initiatives that deliver the greatest customer value and support to Caterpillar IT technology objectives. This business-minded, technology-skilled architect provides thought leadership and customer / stakeholder engagement supporting systems, process, and data layers, and much more. This architect collaborates with leaders to set strategic direction and provide high-level design guidance while supporting high degrees of business autonomy, all the while ensuring robust, objective standards that support the business for years to come. A bridge between Caterpillar Construction Industries and Caterpillar IT :

As a Senior leader you will be expected to build valuable relationships and drive business value to the Construction Industries business unit, while operating as a key member of the Caterpillar IT organization.

What You Will Do:

As the CI-IT Business Solution Architect, you will own the definition, design, and execution oversight of Construction Industries technology roadmap. You will collaborate closely with CI-IT Engagement Managers, Portfolio Leader, and peers across Caterpillar IT to ensure that our systems are architected in alignment with business needs and best-fit technology architectures. Your role will involve active participation in critical business initiatives, providing expert input / recommendations on technology solution / approach / architecture. You will provide input for Portfolio Leader delivery oversight and alignment with CI-IT and Caterpillar IT security, compliance, and governance organizations. In doing so, you will enable CI-IT to balance short-term needs with long-term technology transformation considerations. The breadth of your responsibilities will include:

  • Stay at the forefront of disrupting digital trends. You will be an ambassador for change. You will solve business problems and drive growth for clients through digital transformation.

  • Take leading roles collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, facing off with client stakeholders, SME’s and managing client relationships.

  • Facilitate alignment between business and IT, and across a highly matrixed and business-specific IT landscape.

  • Engage business and IT stakeholders, building and maintaining relationships.

  • Analyze trends and disruptions and assess their impact on targeted business outcomes.

  • Tell stories to visualize the future state and trigger long-term planning.

  • Oversee end-to-end work structure complex problems, develop clear hypothesis, conduct analyses, and provide recommendations through a data-driven process.

  • Drive business-enabling technology architecture with a “business outcome” lens.

  • Lead development of IT strategies and roadmaps to drive investments in enterprise capabilities.

  • Establish application and technology portfolio management processes and tools to provide transparency and reduce technical debt.

  • Partner with business and technology leaders to understand and translate business objectives into technological solutions.

  • Collaborate with business and technology stakeholders to understand business needs, define future-state business capabilities, and establish a technical vision.

  • Own and be responsible for a cohesive technology landscape for Construction Industries business domains, within the framework of our Enterprise Architecture.

  • Skillfully align and communicate technology roadmaps to also align IT priorities with business partners.

  • Identify opportunities to digitize business processes and experience with internal innovation teams.

  • Lead architecture governance, technology standards processes and reference architecture development.

  • Function as a trusted advisor, providing insights and recommendations on technology solutions and innovations.

  • Evaluate business, information, applications, and technology views of the solutions and identify risks.

  • Research current and emerging technology and engage with other architects to innovate in a risk appropriate manner to accelerate corporate growth.

  • Provide support to management on build vs buy analysis and decisions.

  • Partner with Business leads on projects (large and small) to equip them with visibility to gaps and proposed solutions as part of a cohesive business-focused technology ecosystem.

  • Collaborate with business leaders and stakeholders to understand their strategic goals, challenges, and technology needs.

  • Proactively identify opportunities where IT can add value to the business and drive digital transformation.

  • Collaborate with and mentor team members through architecture/design review, knowledge sharing and ensure adherence to continuous improvement practices as required to meet quality time-to-market imperatives.

  • Establish partnership across Caterpillar IT and Construction Industries by driving discussions with a diverse group of stakeholders including Enterprise Architects, Delivery teams and Business Leadership and Users.

  • Leverage knowledge of best practices for enterprise functions such as security, performance, development, and application governance to become a trusted advisor across Caterpillar.

What You Have:

  • Experience at a top management consulting firm, private equity, or strategy and operations at technology company.

  • An effective communicator, able to convey complex ideas clearly and concisely, is comfortable in business and technical discussions.

  • Expert in building trusting relationships and influencing others (including executive audiences).

  • Strong people development and leadership skills; able to manage multiple extended or virtual teams.

  • Collaborative innovator who is also an independent thinker.

  • Initiative-taker who thrives and can multitask in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment.

  • Expertise in the enterprise software/ SaaS Industry, GTM Strategy.

  • Excellent analytical, planning, and organizational skills. Organizationally savvy, with situational and contextual intelligence of the political climate of the enterprise and how to navigate obstacles and politics.

  • Ready to think, behave and act in an innovative consulting manner to drive the organization’s digital business strategies.

  • Understands and speaks the language of the business. Excellent written, verbal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to articulate innovative ideas and concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Trusted and respected as a thought leader who can influence and persuade business and IT leaders.

  • Comfortable, experienced, and accomplished at working with business executives, and able to push back in a professional and diplomatic way.

  • Highly collaborative and supportive of business and its ideas and strategies.

  • Highly innovative with aptitude for foresight, systems thinking and design thinking.

  • Vendor-and technology-neutral- more interested in achieving targeted business outcomes than in a personal preference, or in vested personal preferences of other business and IT leaders.

  • Composed in the face of opposition to architectural principles, governance, and standards.

  • Practical approach to problem solving and decision making.

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Possess an in-depth understanding of Manufacturing domain knowledge. Specializations include business case development, operating models, risk management, corporate functions, digitalization solutions, and product offerings.

  • Extensive prior Big 4 consulting experience.

  • Progressive complex IT systems design and development experience in major enterprise IT systems, and cloud platform integrations.

  • Experience in IT architecture development in either waterfall or agile project methodology.

  • Collaborative skills working with Business Partners in developing Business Processes, creation of architecture Design Documents and share with senior IT and Business leaders.

  • Strong organization and planning skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.

  • Ability to adjust plan to evolving business needs.

  • Knowledge and experience in project management (Scope, Cost and Time Estimation, Resource Planning etc.)

  • Innovation mindset.

  • Experience in multiple technologies including Distributed/ Mainframe / Integration/ ERP, especially SAP and S4/ Hana; Digital manufacturing systems including SAP ME; Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions including SAP teamcenter; Sales & Operating Planning (S&OP) solutions; Integration technologies; Snowflake; PowerBI.

Additional Info :

  • The primary location for this position is Dallas, TX.

  • This position may require 10% travel.

  • Sponsorship is not approved.

  • Travel: This role provides strategic architectural support for Construction Industries, including corporate and globally-disperse manufacturing sites. As such, travel to key facilities will be expected to both quickly learn the business and the periodically, especially as strategic / transformation projects become priorities in our multi-year roadmap. Initial travel may include several global locations and then moderate to 3-6 trips per year.
