Summary The incumbent of this position serves as a float/gap Physician Assistant for Primary Care at the Oscar G Johnson VAMC (OGJVAMC). The float/gap Physician Assistant will travel to the OGJVAMC eight outlying CBOCs whether with a government vehicle or private vehicle to cover provider shortage. Coverage scenarios and locations may change daily based on patient care needs. Responsibilities 1.Primary focus of practice is the independent clinical evaluation of Veterans through new patient intake program including prevention and patient self-management. Comprehensive Primary Care evaluations will be provided to both male and female Veterans. 2.Promotes, directs, evaluates and is responsible for referral to management of clinical concerns that are found during these evaluations. 3.Functions as a member of a Primary Care intake team, collaborating with other PACT teams, clinical and administrative support members to provide timely, quality, coordinated care for Veterans. 4.Utilized and promotes approved standards of care, procedures, methods and techniques, safety precautions and protocols in their application to this population in all settings. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBIITES: 1.Provided guidance and support to the Physician Assistants assigned to Primary Care in their respective areas of responsibility. 2.Participates in and attends medical center committees as assigned by the ACOS of Primary Care and the Chief of Staff. 3.Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goal measures by the Medical Center. 4. Identifies individual professional learn needs and participates in formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learned and facility wide mandatory TMS training. 5. Actively participates in the Performance Improvement process of the medical center and/or assigned CBOC. Integrates pertinent aspects of the performance improvement program into his/her professional practice. CLINICAL RESPONSIBLITIES: 1. Provides quality patient-centered patient care to both inpatients and outpatients for adults age18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by ACOS of PC Service or designee. 2. Demonstrate sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physician assistants. 3. Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professional, medical center staff, and management. 4. Participates in peer review process when requested. 5. Participates in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment plan and discharge plans of patients. 6. Systematically evaluates patient care programs in all Medicine venues. 7. Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and finding from research and studies. Keeps informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal. 8. Successfully integrates patient care activities on Clinical Services and other patient care programs at the medical center and in the community such as Social Work, Prosthetics, Home Based Primary Care (HBPC), and private nursing homes. 9. Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate. 10. Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS within prescribed timeframes and accuracy. 11. Includes patient/family/significant other/health care provider in establishing realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plan and in planning care on a continuum; assists staff in the process of mutual goal setting. 12. Demonstrates skill in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs. 13. Utilizes problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact on patient care or staff performance and makes decisions based on professional standards. 14. Prescribe pharmacotherapeutic and non-pharmacotherapeutic regimes according to clinical privileges. 15.Monitors and evaluates patients' responses to treatment plans. 16.Actively participates in the Performance Improvement process of the medical center and/or assigned CBOC. Integrates pertinent aspects of the performance improvement program into his/her professional practice. [Graduate of a training program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following: (1) Master's degree in any discipline; OR (2) Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.] c. Certification. [Must have successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE). NOTE: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is no longer required for employment in VHA. (See paragraph 3a in this standard for additional information regarding the certification requirement for employees grandfathered into the occupation.) d. Licensure. PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State.
