Description of Work

INTERNAL POSTING-Only temporary or permanent NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 may apply.

Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, inspecting contract work and operation of heavy equipment. Work may require lifting to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to Emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, and construction procedures.

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.

Additional Expectations:

Safety toe shoes needed. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
