Description of Work

This position will serve as the Assistant District Engineer for the Statesville District Office. Applicants should have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering. This position will be responsible for providing supervision of administrative and technical staff performing District Office functions to ensure compliance with department policy and guidelines. The position will assist the District Engineer in performing essential functions of the office such as reviewing and issuing driveway permits, oversize/overweight permits, approving subdivision plans, issuing, and monitoring right of way encroachments, coordination with local governments on development projects and STIP projects, managing resurfacing programs, and assisting with project development tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software.

  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve basic engineering problems.

  • Knowledge of engineering standards, policies and procedures related to transportation.

  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.

  • Experience writing memos, reports, and emails that clearly convey technical information and engineering concepts.

Additional Expectations:

Employee must have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering, including highway construction and maintenance methods and techniques. Must have the ability to read and interpret highway construction plans and analyze and solve difficult highway maintenance and construction problems. Must have the ability to communicate orally and in writing with DOT staff and employees, Governmental Officials, Private Engineers and Developers, and the general public. Experience with personnel management is preferred. Must have the ability to operate a computer using Microsoft and SAP applications. Must be able to operate a state motor vehicle. Employee will be subject to outside environmental conditions, noise and traffic hazards and will be required to traverse difficult and steep terrain.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors
