Job Description

Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services (IVRS) is accepting applications for a Rehabilitation Counselor Intern in our Iowa City, IA office for theSpring 2025 semester. We are looking for students that are eager to learn and be part of an office team dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities in achieving their employment goals.

As of July 1, 2023, Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services has become part of Iowa Workforce Development.

Job Description

As a Rehabilitation Counselor Intern, you will have the opportunity to put the skills and knowledge that you have learned into practice. You will work directly with youth and adults with disabilities and provide professional services that assist our job candidates in developing career goals and receiving the services, resources, and supports needed to reach that goal. As an intern, there will be opportunities to develop relationships with community partners, including job centers, schools, and employers. Supervision and feedback are provided to expand and strengthen your skills.

Duties and responsibilities, with training and supervision, include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Determine eligibility for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services by analyzing medical information and identifying disability related barriers to employment

  • Assist job candidates in exploring careers and developing a plan for employment through the use of assessments and labor market information

  • Provide vocational counseling that assists job candidates in identifying their skills and strengths, addressing disability factors, exercising informed choice, and maintaining progress towards their employment plans

  • Support job candidates in accessing a variety of services, which may include training, assistive technology, benefits planning, supported employment and job placement.

  • Utilize the business services team to make connections with employers and provide services to employers that support hiring of individuals with disabilities

  • Apply policy and maintain case records that contain required documentation

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Currently enrolled in a master’s program in rehabilitation counseling, human resources, school counseling, mental health counseling, social work, psychology, education, or a closely related field.
