Summary This position is located in Badlands National Park. The purpose of the position is to perform routine biological science tasks common to the organization. On-the-job training will be provided. Responsibilities The incumbent serves as a member of an invasive plant management team based at Badlands National Park. Specific work assignments include: 1) assist in the management of exotic plants using chemical, mechanical, and biological techniques, 2) assist in the collection and management of data and records such as, GPS data and herbicide application, 3) assist in the establishment and maintenance of vegetation restoration projects. Restoration projects include planting and caring for native trees, shrubs and grasses. The employee will be required to mix, load, and apply herbicides with ATV, UTV and backpack sprayers. Assist in the maintenance of equipment and data collected in the field. The use of standard pesticide application methods and standard safety equipment will be required. Operation of on- and off- road vehicles is a job requirement. Training for many activities may be acquired on-the-job. The ATV Rider Course, First Aide/CPR Classes and South Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator License will be given when employee arrives. The required examination for the license may be taken on work time and employee must pass the exam within 30 days of his or her start date. This is a summer seasonal position expected to last from mid-May through mid-September. Normal work shifts will be Monday- Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with some weekend, evening work and travel is required. Work involves walking, climbing, and hiking while carrying a 3-gallon backpack sprayer through rough terrain, sometimes for extended periods of time. Lifting moderately heavy items, bending and stooping for long periods, and working under occasionally inclement (cold, hot, rain, wind) weather. Work will be performed under the direction of a crew leader. The employee will participate in daily tasks and will report activities to the field crew leader. Employee will be stationed at Badlands National Park and travel to other National Parks to assist in weed management. Transportation, lodging, and per diem will be provided while in travel status. GS-0404-02: Under the guidance of higher-level employees assists with the collection of biological science field data. Performs routine and repetitive field tasks (e.g. revegetation projects, seed collection, stream surveys, rehabilitation and replanting of trail sides, repair and removal of fence, etc. associated with the management, protection, restoration and Improvement of park resources. Following accepted procedures, performs routine and repetitious field and laboratory operations such as sorting and preservation of specimens. Performs data entry and record keeping, prepares simple summary reports, and assists with the efficient operation of the office. Assists higher-level employees with the installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment used for sampling, monitoring, trapping, etc. and assists with the repair and maintenance of resource management support facilities. Assists higher-level employees with different preparation, set-up and delivery of formal or informal programs related to natural resource management. Preparatory work and subsequent public contact is structured and supervised, with unusual or difficult questions referred to the supervisor. GS-0404-03: Assists higher-level employees with the collection and organization of biological science field data. Performs field tasks (e.g. trapping of small animals, collection of seed, propagation of native plants, controlling of invasive plants, rehabilitation and replanting of trail sides, repair and removal of fence, etc. associated with the management, protection, restoration, and improvement of park resources. Following accepted procedures performs routine laboratory operations such as preparation, sorting, and preservation of collected specimens May perform specialized operation such as identification of plant and animal specimens using keys and applying experimental treatments under controlled conditions. Assists higher-level employees with the installation, operation, and maintenance of equipment used for sampling, monitoring, trapping, etc. and assists with the repair and maintenance of resource management support facilities. Assists higher-level employees with the development, preparation, set-up and delivery of formal or informal programs related to natural resource management. Preparatory work and subsequent public contact is structured and supervised, with unusual difficult questions referred to the supervisor. Utilizes a variety of computer programs to maintain field data records, perform data entry, and prepare simple summary reports. Establishes, updates and maintains a variety of office records and assist with the efficient operation of the office. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office and in the field. Field work involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals.
