Role Overview:
The Telecommunication Technician installs, connects, tests, and adjusts mobile and portable two-way radio systems for public safety. You will assess transmission across public safety systems and complete equipment maintenance records required by the Federal Communications Commission. Some maintenance may require field support.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Installs, programs, and maintains mobile and portable two-way radios and/or the public safety microwave and related systems at remote radio sites statewide.
Aligns, tests, programs, and maintains mobile/portable radios and related electronics equipment using various state-of-the-art test instruments.
Provides daily problem resolution for various hardware and software problems related to microwave circuits and wide area networks utilized by much public safety personnel statewide.
Provides customer support assisting with technical questions related to operations of both the microwave and related public safety radio systems.
Completes equipment maintenance records required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and updates computer-generated data.
Performs preventative maintenance to ensure uninterrupted operation of the microwave and related radio systems.
Assists in designing, configuring, and implementing telecommunications systems networks and structured cabling, including multi-layer switches, routers, VPN appliances, etc.
Researchers develop and initiate standardized testing procedures to ensure uninterrupted operation of the statewide 800MHz radio system and provide adequate telecommunications services to the department.
Monitors and inspects backup generators, tower lighting controls, communications tower grounding systems, guy wire anchors and systems, and general communications building and grounds conditions.
Learned new technology by participating in continuing education through research, training, and review of industry technical manuals.

What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:
Must possess a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Class Radiotelephone License or an acceptable equivalent certification such as National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER), Certified Electronics Technician (CET), Society of Broadcast Engineers Certification (SBE) with the ability to apply technical standards, assure compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations.
Advanced understanding of computer operation and terminology with the ability to use sophisticated radio programming software, computer spreadsheets, databases, programming, and information retrieval using various specialized software tools.
Extensive knowledge of component-level troubleshooting techniques and digital electronic diagnostic equipment use.
Comprehensive knowledge of public safety land mobile radio systems and telecommunications.
Availability for after-hour callout to support the statewide public safety radio systems or other emergencies.
Knowledge of high voltage electronics equipment hazards and applicable safety procedures.
Ability to read, comprehend and interpret technical manuals and schematic diagrams.
Ability to communicate and interrelate with non-technical personnel, technical support services, and vendors.
Ability to work alone and unsupervised.
Education:
- Technical diploma or Associates's Degree in electronics from an accredited technical school or college; or acceptable skills, knowledge, and ability in communications and electronics.
