About the State Comptroller's Office:

The mission of the State Comptroller’s Office is to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the Comptroller by: Informing the public about the Indiana State government’s finances; Maintaining the State’s financial records and reports and paying the State’s bills and employees accurately and efficiently; Taking a leadership role in the development of the State’s financial policy; Upholding the public’s trust and confidence by ensuring that Hoosier’s tax dollars are accounted for and spent transparently; Serving as a check and balance within the executive branch to sustain accountability among state and local governmental entities and; Providing quality customer service to all who conduct business with the State of Indiana.

Role Overview:

Incumbent serves as Staff Accountant for the Office of State Comptroller (“Comptroller”), auditing and approving General Ledger transactions for the State of Indiana, performing ledger integrity and reconciliations of the state’s financials data to ensure accurate financial records, assisting with daily deposits, processing various distributions to local government officials, and the review of property tax submissions to the State for review.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $70,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

  • Audit and approve General Ledger journal transactions in accordance with the state’s accounting manual, policies, statutes, and codes

  • Complete regular reviews and reconciliations of accounting information in order to ensure accuracy. These include:

  • Weekly review of zero-dollar ROCs, prior period adjustments, IDB journals, system-generated journal masks, transfer accounts

  • Daily ledger integrity checks

  • Other duties may include but not limited to:

  • Compilation of the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Award (SEFA)

  • Participation in the collection of 1098F data collection and reporting

  • Monthly cash and cash clearing reconciliations between PeopleSoft and the Treasurer of State

  • Weekly interunit/inter-fund cash reconciliation

  • Provide guidance to state agencies in recording general ledger transactions in accordance with the state’s accounting manual, policies, statutes, and codes

  • Assist Asset Coordinator with lease entry

  • Process incoming receipts for the accounting, finance, and settlement department

What You'll Need for Success:

  • PeopleSoft Financial experience preferred

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products

  • Ability to analyze information provided and review asset entries for accuracy and compliance with guidelines

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and set and achieve individual goals

  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

  • Ability to understand material such as detailed forms, standard memos, or letters

  • The level of knowledge and ability required includes a full range of generally accepted and commonly used principles, theories, methodologies, and precedents

  • Incumbent must possess practical knowledge of practices, rules, regulations, theories, principles, or techniques developed through on-the-job training and extended experience

  • The nature of instructions and guidelines for work is generally accepted but is not always clearly applicable. Judgment is needed in selecting the most pertinent guidelines, in interpreting precedents, and adapting standard formulas, methods, or procedures to fit facts and conditions.
