About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI):
The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is one of the largest schools for the blind and visually impaired in the country, in terms of its student population. ISBVI's vision is to provide diverse and salient opportunities for students, educators, and families to access and benefit from its resources. The school is positioned to serve as a center of educational excellence and a broker of best practices research and training for educators, students, and families - which will have the effect of significantly improving the educational experiences and lives of children who are blind or have low vision.
Role Overview:
The School Cook prepares a variety of foods for residential and commuter students. You will need a working knowledge of modern large-scale food preparation, calculating ingredients, and measurements. Knowledge of health safety and sanitation is required.
Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $27,638 ($14.17 per hour). Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Prepare a variety of foods such as meats, soups, vegetables, breads, salads, desserts and casseroles.
Calculate quantities of ingredients to yield desired quantity and quality of food.
Prepare special diet foods following dietitian’s menu orders based on doctor’s orders.
Perform a variety of clean-up and sanitation duties such as washing walls, mopping floors, washing pots and pans and cleaning ovens, grills, carts, appliances and tables.
Store and retrieve food from freezers and refrigerators and maintain inventory of foods.
Requisition and receive supplies periodically.
Check freezer and refrigerator temperatures to determine that food is stored at proper temperatures.
Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
Working knowledge of, and ability to apply, modern principles and practices of large-scale food preparation.
Working knowledge of the use of large-scale food production equipment and how to calculate ingredients to yield desired quantity.
Working knowledge of weights and measures and how quantities affect cooking time and quality of the product prepared.
Working knowledge of health, safety and sanitary principles and practices in institutional kitchens.
Ability to read and accurately follow recipes and special diet menus.
Effective communication skills.
Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
