Job Title : Quality Assurance and R&D Specialist

Location : Indianapolis, IN metro area

Rate : $18-23/hr.

Shift : 1st | 7am-3:30pm | Monday-Thursday (Friday is a half-day)

This position is Temp/Contract-to-Hire

SUMMARY

Support the daily responsibilities in the warehouse and on the production line, specifically testing, review the production and material receiving processes and working to help develop products for sales presentations. The focus of the tasks is to both support the quality department as necessary and to be a asset to the R&D department in the development of products and processes. This is accomplished by visual inspection, analytical testing and through the utilization of practical food technology knowledge. Employee is considered as a resource to the Quality department and R&D development so serves as inspector of sanitation activities, monitors other employee practices regarding sanitary work and verification of acceptability when clearing post repair activities or emergency actions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintain a respective attitude to fellow employees.

  2. Help in maintaining clean lab and work area by sweeping, mopping, and removing any debris in the area.

  3. Load and unload items from the warehouse for the purpose of analysis including collecting samples; may be required to help assess the viability of a raw material in storage or before use in processing.

  4. Evaluate materials at the intervals set by policies and procedures of company using both sensory and scientific practices.

  5. Routinely walk through all processing areas to observe work practices and advise if any non-compliant activities area noted, if filling in for QA Tech position .

  6. Conduct routine verifications for the operation of foreign material exclusions devices including, but not limited to, metal detectors, sifters, filters, and magnets.

  7. Verify the calibration of sensing devices such as scales, balances, and thermometers.

  8. Comply with requests and orders of supervisors in a respective manner.

  9. Compile regular documentation of observations and testing results and provide them to the appropriate management personnel for review.

  10. File documents, store samples and maintain process related materials for easy access if required for investigations.

  11. Help assess raw materials/ingredients for match to standards and proper use in processing as part of the evaluation steps in vetting new materials.

  12. Assist in the production of sales samples, may include making a bench sample in lab from scratch or taking current materials and repackaging into a new proposed package.

  13. Aid in the development of new products or making a variation to a current product to match a customer’s or salespersons’ need or innovation.

  14. Be available to be a part of the first operational production make-up run of new formulas or variations to support the successful launch of new products in the facilities.

  15. Support and encourage all SQF Initiatives to maintain the highest food safety and food quality standards.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

  • Must maintain a professional, respectful attitude in completing work, and adhering to the requests from shift supervisor and operations manager.

  • Undergo training from quality assurance manager, director and/or shift supervisor in how to maintain standards and procedures of working in the facility.

  • Understand the flow of the production line, and standards in operating each station of the production line.

  • Complying with standards to maintain safe working conditions in the facility.

  • Previous experience in food science, food development or related scientific field of study is preferred but not required.

  • Minimum educational requirements are a B.S. or B.A. in Food Science, or a kindred field of study (Biology, Chemistry, and Nutrition) is preferred however having a High School diploma with 2 to 3 years prior food operations work experience would be acceptable.

  • Hard working, honest, and diligent employees are essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is almost exclusively in the food production facility setting. The environment can be expected to be active, fast paced, and repetitive. Moving machinery, such as conveying lines, and equipment, such as forklifts, are constant aspects of the workplace, so conscious effort to aware and cognizant while working is important.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Standing and moving on feet for extended periods of time. The work can be repetitive and strenuous occasionally, at times requiring workers to be able to lift 80 pounds. Employee must be able to be discerning and decisive as well as assertive but diplomatic in interacting with fellow associates. Workers must be flexible to work in multiple locations within the facility, as well as being attentive to detail and surroundings.
