About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Role Overview:
As an intern with the Division of Youth Services, you will assist in the reintegration of youth into their communities by connecting them with mentoring programs across Indiana. This includes developing relationships with youth during their incarceration and supporting continued connections upon their return home. Additionally, the role entails identifying new resources and local services for the DYS sex offender population and sharing insights with facility treatment teams. Lastly, you will collaborate with the state-wide transition coordinator to develop systems for collecting data on student outcomes.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
Aid with re-integration of youth back to their community. This would include research and connection with mentoring programs available across the State of Indiana that would be available to all youth in DYS. The purpose of these mentors would be to form relationships with youth while incarcerated and then to continue the connection as they return home. This position would work closely with facility Program Directors to ensure that these programs are initiated in our facilities.
Continue the work to locate new resources, to determine the availability of local services for the DYS sex offender population, which will include home-based and residential services. Once the information is formulated it will be shared with the facility treatment team staff.
Collaborate with the state-wide transition coordinator to coordinate, develop, and maintain systems to collect data related to student outcomes relative to school and employment status. Will coordinate with schools, employers, community, and organizations to help eliminate barriers to school and employment success for youth. Will assist the state-wide transition coordinator in working with HOPE (Indiana University) to coordinate mentoring services for students. The vision for this program is to assist students with employment opportunities upon release.
Work with the data team to develop more ways for us to track the effectiveness of our core programs.
Assist in finding grant opportunities to obtain the Change Company manuals for use as individual interventions, provide funding for MRT and/or CBI-CY training to new case management staff, and other resources that could be effective for staff working with our population of youth.

What You'll Need for Success:
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
Academic work in related field
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
Ability to conduct well-informed research
Ability to solve complex, critical problems
Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
