About the Department of Natural Resources (DNR):

The mission of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education. To satisfy such a broad and diverse responsibility, the Department is divided into two distinct areas of responsibility: the Regulatory Management Team; and the Land Management Team. The Regulatory Management Team consists of the Divisions of Water; Entomology and Plant Pathology; Historic Preservation and Archaeology; Reclamation; and Oil and Gas. Outdoor recreation and land management programs are housed within the Land Management Team. That unit consists of State Parks; Nature Preserves; Land Acquisition; Fish and Wildlife; Outdoor Recreation and Forestry.

Role Overview:

DNR Legal provides legal support to all Divisions within DNR, including but not limited to Water, Fish & Wildlife, Reclamation, and Law Enforcement. DNR Legal consists of the General Counsel, two Assistant General Counsels, three senior attorneys, and a paralegal. We are currently seeking a law clerk to assist the Assistant General Counsel and senior attorney for the Regulatory Bureau in representing the agency on administrative review cases. In addition, the law clerk may review public records requests, assist with civil cases handled by the Attorney General, conduct legal research, and draft legal memorandums and other documents. This position is intermittent, offering approximately a minimum of 20-25 hours per week during the summer and 15-20 hours during the school year the hours are negotiable upon selection of a candidate.

Salary Statement:

This intermittent law clerk position will pay $20.00/hour.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Conduct legal research and analysis.

  • Prepare draft discovery requests and dispositive motions.

  • Update litigation status on the case management system.

  • Document review for discovery and public records requests.

  • Communicate with DNR staff and legal admin.

  • Provide administrative support.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • The ideal candidate for this law clerk position is currently enrolled in an accredited law school as an incoming 2L or 3L and has an interest in natural resources and conservation law.

  • Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Excel, and Word.

  • Experience with Thomson Reuters and Westlaw Edge.

  • Organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
