About the State Comptroller's Office:

The mission of the State Comptroller’s Office is to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the Comptroller by: Informing the public about the Indiana State government’s finances; Maintaining the State’s financial records and reports and paying the State’s bills and employees accurately and efficiently; Taking a leadership role in the development of the State’s financial policy; Upholding the public’s trust and confidence by ensuring that Hoosier’s tax dollars are accounted for and spent transparently; Serving as a check and balance within the executive branch to sustain accountability among state and local governmental entities and; Providing quality customer service to all who conduct business with the State of Indiana.

Role Overview:

The Communications Specialist serves as the secondary resource for communications, media, and outreach to assist the Communications Director in educating the public and state employees regarding the Indiana State Comptroller’s Office. The Communications Specialist is responsible for assisting the Director in drafting and reviewing communications as assigned. The Communications Specialist may also assist in social media, outreach efforts, and website updates. The position occasionally includes travel and flexible hours.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $60,000.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

  • Draft and review internal communications for state agency or local government contacts, including letters, memos, presentations, and newsletters.

  • Review communication requests from office staff for letters, memos, manuals, newsletters and presentations to ensure all materials adhere to the office brand standard, customer service goals and formatting.

  • Assist with outreach efforts by preparing, attending and/or accompanying the Comptroller to county visits, organization events, and presentations.

  • Assist in managing the office brand for communication tools.

  • Assist in drafting external communications, such as news releases and newsletters.

  • Assist in drafting social media posts and reviewing website content.

  • Assist in front lobby coverage.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or similar field.

  • 3-5 years of related professional experience is required.

  • Strong writing skills coupled with editing and proofreading skills.

  • Knowledgeable of AP Style.

  • Experience managing organizational social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn).

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

  • Strong customer service/customer relations skills.

  • Ability to effectively multi-task with strong organizational skills.

  • Experience with graphic design and website editing is preferred.

  • Hold a valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
