General Purpose

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for the for a Traffic Civil Engineer I or II position. This position performs a

variety of technical and professional duties by evaluating City transportation and traffic needs in the areas of signing and

striping , traffic data collection and analysis, and traffic control and safety .

The full salary range for the Traffic Civil Engineer I is \$32.85 - 45.90 per hour. The starting salary range is \$32 .85 - \$35.75

depending on experience.

The full salary range for the Traffic Civil Engineer II is \$36 .21- \$50 .59 per hour. The starting salary range is \$36 .21- \$42.06

per hour depending on experience.

Essential Functions

Reviews signing and striping layouts for City designed projects and suggests traffic study needs.

Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the public and department staff.

Interacts with the public, City staff, contractors and other organizations to investigate and resolve various traffic issues;

timely and professionally responds to citizen requests and complaints; prepares, reviews and makes recommendations on

various traffic issues taken to the Traffic Safety Committee and Downtown Parking Committee.

Provides support and backup to the City Traffic Engineer and City Engineer in the management of the traffic signal system,

including monitoring of operations and signal timing adjustments, as needed.

Prepares diagrams for sign placement, pavement markings, construction traffic flow patterns, parking lay-outs and bike

lanes; utilizes basic civil drafting methods, software and equipment; reads and interprets plans and sketches.

Conducts surveys and traffic studies as directed by supervisors; investigates requests for traffic control devices; performs a

variety of traffic engineering studies involving the use of computer programs; conducts surveys of traffic density; obtains

and organizes data concerning accidents and tabulates results ; prepares initial recommendations and reports to supervisor

and Mayor and City Council.

Determines and prioritizes traffic count and speed study data collection for short-term and long-term needs. Creates,

maintains and keeps current traffic engineering study data files; reviews subdivision applications and plans prepared by

City and consulting firms; reviews temporary traffic control plans submitted by contractors; prepares traffic control plans

upon request from City Departments doing work within the City Rig ht-of-way.

Provides technical support and training regarding traffic control devices and markings to other departments and traffic

maintenance staff.

Performs lead field inspection role for projects involving thermoplastics, lane markings and various traffic control devices.

May address civic groups and perform other public relations activities; assists in preparing Division budget ; assists with

other Public Works projects and assignments as needed.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education and Experience:

Civil Engineer I

A. Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or

related field.

AND

B. One (1) or more years of experience associated with municipal or traffic engineering, or closely related field preferred;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Civil Engineer II

A. Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering or

related field.

AND

B. Four (4) years of professional experience associated with municipal engineering or closely related field;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Civil Engineer

Knowledge of project management techniques and practices;
