Battelle Energy Alliance dba Idaho National Laboratory Advanced Battery Postdoctoral Researcher in Idaho Falls, Idaho

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Advanced Battery Postdoctoral Researcher to work in our Energy Storage and Electric Transportation department reporting to the Project Investigator. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

This position in the Energy Storage & Electric Transportation Department will advance understanding of the role that impurities play in the performance of advanced batteries. This will be achieved through a combination of experimental and data science approaches to actively identify and quantify pathways to cell degradation. To achieve this goal, the researcher will combine knowledge of electrochemistry, materials science, chemistry and data science.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Research, develop, and evaluate the properties and behavior of materials as affected by the composition, treatment, manufacture, and conditions of use.
  • Investigate and conduct experiments concerned with physical characteristics, mechanical properties, and processing of materials to develop and understand new applications, ceramics, metal alloys, processes, and methods of fabrication.

*Minimum Requirements: *

  • PhD in materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, applied physics, mechanical engineering. Degree requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the past 5 years.
  • Strong hands-on experimental skills including the use of inert atmosphere gloveboxes
  • Strong experience in electrochemistry or in battery cycle life analysis for lithium ion batteries
  • Experience in materials characterizations: X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Inductively coupled plasma (ICP), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS)
  • Work in a versatile and highly collaborative research environment. Communication with others on the team is critical as you will work with multiple researchers with expertise with multiple areas of expertise and from different organizations.
  • Strong track-record of publishing research articles in respected peer-reviewed journals in the position’s research area.
  • Well versed and adept in formulating research plans, designing experiments, data analysis, and the formulation of conclusions and manuscript writing.

*Desired Requirements: *

  • Experience in data science approaches for data reduction, failure mode and correlation analysis.
  • Experience using Python
  • US citizen, legal permanent resident (green card) or ability to obtain an export license to work on high-energy battery systems

*Job Information: *

  • The target salary for this position is $96,900. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
