General Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, chemical/industrial hygiene, environmental sciences or related field. Two years of related experience in biosafety, chemical safety, environmental safety, or a related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

Works with a variety of university stake holders to develop, implement, and maintain laboratory safety policies and practices related to the use, management, and disposal of hazardous chemicals, hazardous biological materials, and recombinant DNA .

Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):

Oversees general administration of the University’s biosafety and chemical safety programs, emergency plans for spills, and contamination, trainings, inspections, and other related activities. Prepares written reports and audits relating to concerns and issues affecting biosafety, chemical management, or laboratory equipment, operations, and materials. Assists with the development, maintenance, and administration of written programs, such as the Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Program, Hazardous Waste Management Program and Biosafety Manual. Annually reviews and updates these written plans and programs. Develops, implements, and provides program related training to affected parties. Conducts routine inspections of laboratory and hazardous waste facilities to identify and correct deficiencies and ensure compliance with University policies. Provides technical guidance and recommendations to faculty and staff regarding laboratory safety procedures, laboratory security, chemical management, hazardous waste collection and disposal, and personal protective equipment as required. Provides a high level of customer service to all university departments. Works with a variety of university stake holders to develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures related to laboratory safety. Ensures all University stakeholders that work with or have the possibility to be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biohazardous materials, or recombinant DNA are adequately trained in all areas of inventory management, storage, handling, use, and disposal. Maintains accurate records and inventory of all items pertaining to biosafety and chemical management. Performs other related duties as assigned.
