Job Description: Maintenance Tool Crib Technician (Multicraft Maintenance)
Position Overview:
The Maintenance Tool Crib Technician is responsible for managing and maintaining the tools, equipment, and materials needed by the maintenance department in a multicraft industrial setting. This role ensures that tools are available, properly maintained, and safe for use by the maintenance team, supporting both scheduled and emergency repairs, as well as daily operational needs. The technician is responsible for tool organization, inventory management, tool inspection, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tool and Equipment Management:
Issue, receive, and track tools and equipment for maintenance personnel.
Maintain a well-organized and accessible tool crib, ensuring that tools are in good working condition.
Perform routine inspections and maintenance of tools and equipment to ensure they meet safety standards.
Ensure tools are calibrated regularly and stored correctly to prevent damage.
- Inventory Control:
Maintain accurate inventory of tools, equipment, and parts in the tool crib.
Monitor stock levels and reorder tools and parts as necessary to avoid shortages.
Track the use of consumables, parts, and small tools, ensuring an adequate supply.
Utilize inventory management software or systems to log all transactions (issuing/returning tools).
- Tool Repair and Maintenance:
Perform minor repairs on tools and equipment (e.g., replacing worn parts, sharpening blades, etc.).
Coordinate with external vendors or contractors for more complex tool repairs or calibration services.
Ensure that all tools are cleaned and properly stored after use.
- Safety and Compliance:
Ensure that all tools meet safety standards and are in compliance with OSHA or other regulatory guidelines.
Conduct periodic safety audits to ensure compliance with maintenance department protocols.
Educate maintenance staff on the proper use of tools and safety procedures.
- Support for Maintenance Operations:
Provide technical support to the maintenance department, ensuring that technicians have the necessary tools for scheduled and unscheduled work.
Assist with the preparation of tools and parts for special projects, planned maintenance, or emergency repairs.
Maintain detailed records of tools issued, returned, and serviced, along with any maintenance or repair history.
- Administrative Tasks:
Update and maintain tool crib inventory records, reports, and logs in a timely manner.
Collaborate with management to identify and resolve any issues regarding tool availability or condition.
Participate in the periodic audit of tool crib operations.
- Workplace Organization:
Ensure that the tool crib and surrounding areas are clean, organized, and free from hazards.
Monitor and ensure proper labeling and storage of tools to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Experience:
Previous experience in a maintenance or tool crib environment is preferred, ideally in a multicraft setting (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, etc.).
Strong understanding of maintenance tools, equipment, and parts, with knowledge of safety standards and regulations.
Technical Skills:
Basic knowledge of maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery used in industrial settings.
Familiarity with tool repair and preventive maintenance practices.
Strong troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving tool-related issues.
Organization Skills:
Ability to effectively manage inventory and track tool usage.
Attention to detail in inventory records, tool condition, and maintenance logs.
Safety & Compliance Knowledge:
In-depth understanding of workplace safety procedures related to the use and storage of tools.
Familiarity with OSHA standards and best practices in tool maintenance.
Communication Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively with maintenance personnel and management regarding tool availability, condition, and inventory needs.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift, move, and organize heavy tools and materials as needed.
Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, including standing for long periods and moving between various work areas.
Tools and Parts Managed by the Maintenance Tool Crib Technician:
- Hand Tools:
Wrenches (e.g., adjustable, socket, torque)
Screwdrivers (flathead, Phillips, specialty)
Hammers, mallets, pry bars
Pliers, cutters, snips
Utility knives, chisels
Measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures)
- Power Tools:
Drills (corded and cordless)
Impact drivers and wrenches
Grinders (angle grinders, bench grinders)
Saws (circular, reciprocating, jigsaws)
Sanders, polishers, and other power-driven equipment
- Specialty Tools:
Hydraulic jacks and presses
Torque wrenches and measurement devices
Alignment tools
Electrical testers and meters (multimeters, clamp meters)
Calibration tools
- Maintenance Equipment:
Ladders, scaffolding, and lifting equipment
Heat guns, soldering irons, and welding tools
Air compressors and related pneumatic tools
Pumps and hoses
- Consumable Parts and Supplies:
Lubricants, oils, and greases
Adhesives, tapes, and sealants
Fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers, screws, etc.)
Gaskets and seals
Filters, belts, and hoses
- Safety Equipment:
Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, ear protection, and hard hats
Lockout/tagout (LOTO) equipment
First aid supplies and spill kits
- Storage & Organizational Supplies:
Toolboxes, cabinets, racks, and shelves
Bins, drawers, and containers for small parts
Tool cribs and tool storage carts
Additional Skills and Tools (Desirable):
Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) to track tools, parts, and maintenance schedules.
Basic knowledge of welding, fabrication, and machining for minor repairs of tools and equipment.
Ability to operate and maintain forklifts and other material handling equipment.
Forklift or material-handling certification (if applicable).

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00
