Nuclear Engineering Technologist III or Senior Nuclear Engineering Technologist – Complex NDE

This job can be filled at the third or fourth level of the non-Engineer degreed engineering technologist job classification. This position plans and implements the Complex NDE activities throughout the Nuclear fleet. Complex NDE activities are to be conducted in accordance with Duke Energy procedures, Oversight of Complex Vendor Performed NDE and NDE Level III Oversight of Complex NDE applying to Complex NDE, including select Engineering Programs and repair activities (10CFR50.55a, ASME Section XI, MRP 227/228, License Renewal, Owner Elected, NEI 03-08, BWR VIP, etc.) but excluding Steam Generator inspection activities governed by Steam Generator Management Program. Utilizing Complex NDE examination schedules created by the Fleet Programs group, this position arranges the needed project planning and implementation of site-specific support to ensure successful completion of the associated inspection and/or repair activity.

This position interfaces with the vendor provider to ensure equipment and personnel are prepared for the inspection. Implementation contingency plans, management updates, and site presentations will be performed by this individual. Upon implementation of said activities, this position will transition into an oversight role to validate the activities are proceeding as expected during outage execution.

This position manages/leads the High Impact Teams for each work scope assigned, have frequent interaction with various Site and Fleet organizations. These can include NOS Management, Engineering Leadership, Principal NDE Level IIIs, Site and Fleet Senior Leadership Team (e.g.: ORB / T-Meetings / PHC presentations/ Leadership/Executive Challenges), and various engineers. The individual will attend meetings representing Complex NDE and Fleet Programs Engineering, review work schedules, and perform in outage schedule related functions consistent with the milestones per procedures. The individual will also review Horizons entries to ensure correct funding is provided for upcoming inspection activities and ensure contract requisitions are processed for the needed work/support.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the pre-outage implementation of Complex NDE activities

  • Involvement in vendor equipment and personnel preparation activities, including online, pre-outage and outage.

  • Involvement of the implementation of outage related Complex NDE activities.

  • Issuing Contract Requisitions for Complex NDE services, participating in vendor bid events, reviewing invoices prior to approval, maintaining pre-outage and outage budgets.

  • Prepare needed documents for Site and Fleet management (e.g., ORB, contingency plans, T-3 presentations, 2-year implementation plans, etc.)

  • Functions as a Job Sponsor to support Outage Implementation

Basic/Required Qualifications:

Nuclear Engineering Technologist III

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology and minimum of three years related experience.

  • In lieu of Bachelor’s degree, Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent and minimum of five years related experience OR High School Diploma/GED and minimum of ten years related experience.

Senior Nuclear Engineering Technologist

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology and minimum of six years related experience.

  • In lieu of Bachelor’s degree, Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or equivalent and minimum of eight years related experience OR High School Diploma/GED and minimum of twelve years related experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge and understanding of the QA program, Engineering Materials / ASME Programs, and other related documents.

  • Understanding of NDE inspection methodologies

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use Project Management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and/or with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.

  • Experience reading and interpreting procedures, drawings, specifications, proposals, and codes.

  • Minimum of 4 years NDE experience in one or more of the following methods:

  • Magnetic Particle (MT)

  • Liquid Penetrant (PT)

  • Visual/ ISI (VT)

  • Radiography (RT)

  • Ultrasonics (UT)

  • Previous Work Management experience

  • Previous NDE Routine Coordination experience

  • Previous Contract Management experience (issuing Contract Requests / Change Requests, approving invoices, managing various accounting codes)

  • Previous Horizons experience.

  • Previous Engineering experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ASTM, ANSI, ASNT and ASME codes.

  • Demonstrated advance techniques of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams, OneNote, etc.)

  • Project Management Certification (e.g., PMP)

Specific Requirements

  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.

  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.

  • Occasional overnight travel.

  • On-Site support of Duke Energy Nuclear Outages.

Working Conditions

  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.

  • Hybrid mobility classification with two days onsite and two days remote
