Sysco Transportation Procurement Manager in HOUSTON, Texas
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Carrier Sourcing & Development, the Transportation Procurement Manager is an individual contributor who will serve as a key change agent and/or resource to help drive the following: continuous process improvements, strategic development of sourcing initiatives, cost management activities, carrier performance and service level enhancements, and carrier relationship management. This associate will support key business projects that ensure carrier capacity is secured for Sysco controlled freight supporting the Sysco Network including all specialty companies and Redistribution Centers. This includes using efficient procurement practices for transportation services at the most sustainable cost, deploying best in-class relationship management strategies, Key Performance Indicators and metrics, and enhanced Carrier Compliance practices.
Responsible for the efficient carrier procurement and relationship management practices of transportation services supporting inbound loads in Sysco’s North American Broadline & Specialty Companies.
Duties/Responsibilities
Executes carrier procurement activities for all transportation modes inbound into Sysco’s North American Broadline & Specialty Companies – negotiating rates and sourcing carrier capacity to support Merchandising teams.
Negotiate with carrier partners on contractual lane rates to mitigate cost increases and/or improve service performance.
Supports the entire procurement process from developing the sourcing (RFP) strategy to final carrier award for the national, and/or regional sourcing (RFP) activities.
Identify cost improvement opportunities and work with Merchandising teams to solidify actions to drive financial benefits.
Rating & Routing Management – Responsible for ensuring and maintaining the input accuracy of Rating and Routing within Manhattan (TMS) and through the creation of Rating Repository forms following lane level changes (e.g. carrier changes, rate changes, etc).
Collaborate with Freight Expense and Claims Management to resolve carrier issues regarding payment and rates.
Market Intelligence – Share analysis and understanding of current carrier market conditions with Merchandising teams and others where appropriate.
Supplier Conversions – work with Market Logistics Managers (MLMs) to convert delivered suppliers to FOB, by leveraging carrier network through sourcing activities.
Drive topline cost savings initiatives; seasonal tier pricing, Load fill improvement initiatives, fuel management, network optimization, etc. (i.e. pick reduction, wait time improvement)
Continuous deployment/improvement of Program Management initiatives such as: Sysco Rail Program, Freight lane matching, Backhaul Change management, etc.
Collaborate with the Merchandising Produce team to increase supplier conversions, load-fill improvements, LEI, etc. Partner with suppliers and carriers for enhancing the driver experience, increasing efficiency, and providing excellent service to key stakeholders.
Supports Internal Key-Stakeholders with various/ad hoc freight quote requests (e.g. CMU)
Collaborates closely with carriers to increase their Service Levels and Key Performance Indicators through routine monthly Carrier Scorecard reviews and provides coaching to carrier partners through collaboration to develop strategies for growth and improvement.
Carrier Relationship Management- Fosters the development of strong carrier partnerships through consistent communication and regular business reviews with carrier partners.
Process Management- Collaborates with the Sr. Carrier Sourcing & Development Manager with ad hoc requests, projects, and develops & presents service level data to carriers.
Develops high service performing carriers for inbound loads sourced in the U.S. and Canada delivering to Sysco’s North American Broadline & Specialty Companies.
Identifies gaps in carrier lane coverage and cost & volume variances via the monthly Savings Tracker, which is produced following sourcing events, to ensure consistent contractual compliance amongst the carrier base and collaborates with the carrier sourcing team to ensure capacity and service standards are met.
Develops methodology for Carrier Segmentation/Classification and drives continuous improvement with Strategic, Diverse, Core, and Specialty carriers.
Carrier Selection & Validation- Responsible for executing new carrier partner onboarding/network removals across Sysco’s North American Broadline & Specialty Companies.
Responsible for ensuring Carrier Compliance on Schedule A’s/Contracted lanes.
Manages Carrier Contract Compliance of Sysco’s Inbound Transportation Master Service Agreements (MSA) e.g. Contract Amendments and Drop trailer Agreements, etc.
Updates/reviews and enforces Sysco Carrier Operational Guidelines.
Responsible for ensuring data input accuracy of Rating and Routing Guide Compliance by reviewing the Rating Repository forms that are created by the Carrier Sourcing Team.
Job Qualifications
Strong negotiation skills required for carrier contracts e.g.- prepare for and conduct negotiations in alignment with the sourcing strategy to drive cost savings and service enhancement initiatives.
Ability to analyze and disseminate numerical data, and solve problems, by leveraging processes and tools related to cost management and financial analysis to maximize margins and cash flow.
Experience working with complex logistics and transportation networks.
Carrier Relationship Management – Demonstrates the ability to use a range of tools and techniques to improve carrier performance. Effectively collaborates with carriers to unlock value from the relationship. Evaluates Carrier Performance Metrics & Tracking, which creates measures and supporting data utilized to determine if the sourcing strategies are meeting their objectives in the most efficient way.
Carrier Selection & Contract Management– Identifies and qualifies carriers across multiple modes of transport (e.g.- Full truckload, Less-than-Truckload, Intermodal, etc.) through rigorous criteria and vetting processes and enforces established robust contract agreements.
Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Advanced project management skills are a plus.
Strong Communication skills (verbal & written), ability to build alignment, lead change, and drive results.
Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to work in a dynamic and fluid environment.
Carrier management experience with a large shipper is plus.
Refrigerated transportation experience is a plus.
Understands and complies with Sysco Corp. policies, procedures and business conduct, customs, governmental policies, and environmental regulations.
Food service or grocery experience is plus.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is required (Supply Chain/ Logistics or related field is preferred)
5+ years in a supply chain/logistics role preferred (Transportation Procurement Experience preferred)
Consideration will be given to non-degreed candidates/associates with equivalent of 10+ years’ experience in supply chain/logistics roles dependent on the previous role(s) and responsibilities.
Experience working for a large shipper or carrier.
Working Environment
Normal office environment
Limited travel required (less than 10%)
Position may be performed at the Corp office in Houston.
