Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Engineer - Substation in Houston, Texas

The Staff Electrical Engineer will be responsible for completing either protection & control design or physical design on various substation projects. The Staff Electrical Engineer will work with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting electrical plans according to budget constraints, design factors and client needs. Experience in either P&C or Physical design is acceptable, with a preference for those with experience in both.

Protection & Controls Design

  • Create/modify single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control schematics, communication diagrams, wiring diagrams, cable lists, and relay panel arrangements for the installation of new, or modifications to existing, substations.

  • Perform calculations such as DC battery sizing, AC load sizing, voltage drop, conduit fill, and control cable sizing.

  • Create/modify technical specifications for major equipment, such as power transformers, power circuit breakers, control enclosures, and other related high-voltage materials.

  • Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers, and P&C design staff to fully develop system integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems.

  • Apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings.

  • Assist with client communication and manufacturer drawing reviews.

  • Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.

  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager and others as needed.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced team members.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Physical Design

  • Prepare/create general arrangements, sections and electrical details, yard layouts, and bill of materials for the installation of new, or modifications to existing, substations.

  • Create/modify technical specifications for major equipment, such as power transformers, power circuit breakers, control enclosures, and other related high-voltage materials.

  • Perform calculations such as lightning protection, grounding analysis, and lighting plans.

  • Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to P&C, civil, structural, and transmission line engineers.

  • Apply field mark-ups of project as-built drawings.

  • Assist with client communication and manufacturer drawing reviews.

  • Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.

  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager and others as needed.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced team members.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.

  • Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

Protection & Control:

  • Strong knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, including understanding of three-phase power systems.

  • Knowledge of basic protection principles and practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment.

  • Familiarity with microprocessor based protection and control systems with the ability to understand one-lines and control schematics.

Physical:

  • Substation physical layout, electrical clearances, rigid and strain bus design, ground grid design, surge and direct stroke protection, and raceway design.

Both:

  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA, and ANSI.

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for 1 year experience.

  • 3 years of electrical engineering experience, consulting preferred.

  • Successful completion (i.e. passing) FE or EIT, or PE, preferred.

  • Strong knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.

  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
