Our client, an established, U.S. Treasury certified Community Development Financial institution, is currently seeking to fill a Senior Staff Accountant position. As a recognized nonprofit leader in the Houston metropolitan area and surrounding counties, our client has a successful record of achievements spanning nearly 36 years in the fields of small business lending, entrepreneurial support services, affordable and mixed-income housing development, and community development.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for managing financial functions including bookkeeping, accounts payable and receivable, preparation of invoices, the organizational budget, grant and contract budgets and expenditure reports, payroll processing, and maintaining all accounting records and files. This position reports to the Director of Finance. Additional duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepares periodic (monthly) balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements
- Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books
- Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks
- Reconciles customer accounts and manages accounts receivable collections
- Reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable on a monthly basis
- Monitor cash flow and report on cash status on a weekly basis
- Process cash disbursements on a weekly basis
- Verifies payment of invoices associated with accounts payable
- Maintains accounting software system
- Prepare deposits and enter deposits and ACH bank transactions in the accounting software
- Process the bi-weekly payroll and record in the accounting software
- Review staff timesheets to ensure allocation to the assigned grants and contracts
- Manage the purchase order process for the organization
- Reconcile all credit card purchases to monthly statements
- Perform all cash account reconciliations for all relevant bank accounts
- Assist in the annual budgeting process
- Assist with grant and contract budget proposals
- Monitor all contracts and grants to meet expenditure report deadlines. Prepare reports for grants and contracts
- Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit and preparation of the Form 990
- Maintain accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
- Performs other related duties as assigned
The candidate should possess the following qualifications
- Bachelors degree in accounting
- At least five years of related work experience
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles related to non-profit organizations
- Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks On-line), Excel, Word, and Power point
- Knowledge of federal government regulations and guidelines is a plus
- Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Flexible and creative self-starter who can work both independently and within a team
- Prior experience in a non-profit environment
