Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

Uses professional accounting concepts and internal company policies to solve complex accounting issues including the maintenance of internal controls. Participates in and implements monthly financial close, supervises the assignments of the staff accountants. Prepares monthly management financial reporting package and executive summary schedules. Coordinates and facilitates the process of documenting accounting policies and procedures. Leads projects and improvement initiatives. Responsible for ensuring all controls are operating effectively.

Job Responsibilities

  • High profile role with management responsibility for a functional team that produces internal and external financial information and analysis of the company’s commodity trading and hedging activities

  • In-depth knowledge of physical and financial energy commodity markets (power, natural gas, environmental, and/or retail energy markets preferably)

  • Theoretical and practical expertise associated with accounting and valuation principles relevant to energy transacting activities (contract accounting interpretation, derivative MTM and Hedge accounting, etc)

  • Working understanding of business processes and associated financial and trade risk management systems that ensure appropriate capture, valuation, reporting, and analysis of forward transacting activities

  • Ability to work closely and seamlessly with inter-dependent functional teams, including but not limited to Front Office Trading, Middle Office Risk, and Commodity Settlements.

  • Ability to define, execute, and implement positive change through continuous process improvement/automation initiatives that directly benefit the team and company, returning value through increased efficiency, reporting transparency, analytical capability, and/or risk mitigation.

  • Responsible for design and implementation controls and processes specific to area of control

  • Responsible for ensuring all controls operate effectively each reporting period

  • Ensuring all reconciliations are prepared and reviewed accurately and timely

  • Provides timely feedback and coaching to team to continuously improve performance

  • Decisions typically related to schedule, plans and tactics.

  • Results impact daily operations and progress on small to medium sized projects.

  • Makes technical decisions and performs escalated or more highly complex work of a similar nature to that for which they oversee.

  • Works on problems of diverse scope ranging from moderate to complex. Makes recommendations on new processes, tools and services; leads team in day-to-day implementation activities of new products, services and techniques.

Work Complexity & Independent Judgment

  • Uses independent judgment requiring in-depth analysis of variable factors. Collaborates with management and top professionals/specialists in selection of methods, techniques, and analytical approach.

  • Works within specific guidelines and procedures and is frequently required to interpret application of policies/procedures/technical methods for staff; often required to apply ingenuity and originality.

  • Ability to critically review work of team members and ensure completeness, timeliness and accuracy of product

Self-Management & Leadership

  • Manages day-to-day oversight of staff; may become actively involved to meet schedules and resolve problems.

  • Provides input into human resources decisions such as hiring, promotions, year-end ratings and disciplinary actions.

  • Responsible for performance reviews, including discussion with team members about successes and areas for improvement, promotional decisions, and pay actions for support and professional levels.

Communication & Influence

  • Information sharing – gives and receives information with management and others

  • Positively collaborates with teams within and outside of the accounting organization to ensure understanding of changes and any impact to the related accounting processes.

  • Leads teams to appropriately respond and account for changes timely.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting required.

  • Previous work leadership experience.

  • Requires minimum of 5-10 years in area of specialization, CPA preferred.

  • Industry experienced preferred.
