Powell Industries, Inc. Lead Quality Inspector EDJ in Houston, Texas
Powell is a manufacturer of switchgear and other electrical equipment. We are seeking an experienced Lead Quality Inspector for our location in Southeast Houston! Four 10s schedule: Monday-Thursday 6:00am-4:30pm
A Quality Inspector is responsible for ensuring that products or services meet established quality standards and specifications. They perform inspections, tests, and audits to identify any defects or deviations from quality requirements. Quality Inspectors use various tools and techniques to measure and evaluate the quality of materials, components, and finished products. They document and report any non-conformities and work closely with production teams to address quality issues and implement corrective actions. Additionally, they may participate in the development and improvement of quality control processes and procedures. The Lead Quality Inspector will be responsible for training and leading teams of inspectors, be the primary point of contact for the other department and customer stakeholders, and support their teams on advanced troubleshooting and corrective action implementations. The Lead Quality Inspector will also serve as backup to the Quality Supervisor and assist with the day-to-day supervision of their team.
Essential Responsibilities
To train their Inspection Crew in the Final internal and customer factory acceptance testing of all equipment manufactured at Powell facilities according to Powell Standards.
Schedule their team’s inspection workload to meet internal and customer delivery milestones.
Serve as the subject matter expert for electronic equipment such as microprocessor-based relays, PLCs, etc.
Serve as the Powell Automation Smart Products Subject Matter Expert.
Inspect and test all equipment manufactured at Powell facilities.
Support their team in complex equipment failure investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
Support their team in performing inspection activities.
Responsible for the completion and accuracy of their team’s Quality Control documentation (FITRs, shipping documentation, equipment checklists, etc.)
Responsible for the utilization, maintenance, and calibration of test equipment.
Serve as the primary point of contact with all departments (sales, engineering, production control, fabrication, PCR, switchgear, shipping) including customers to work to resolve quality-related issues.
Serve as the primary contact with all internal departments during production, final inspection and final release to shipping is required.
Serve as the primary contact with other Powell subsidiaries, suppliers, and customers.
Assist in scheduling customer factory acceptance testing with project managers and customers.
Support their team in the timely resolution of engineering and shop discrepancies, non-conformities, and material shortages.
Leads and participates in continuous improvement projects.
Promote a culture of safety. Attend department safety and training meetings and lead team tool box and JSAs.
Ensure Powell employees, suppliers and customers adhere to safety rules and PPE requirements.

Responsible for their team’s work area, cleanliness and organization.
- Act as backup Inspection Supervisor in Inspection Supervisors absence.
Assist Inspection Supervisor in daily supervision of department.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
Minimum 8 years of experience in the industrial electrical field and/or associate degree in electrical technology.
Expert ability to read engineering documentation and drawings including specification sheets, wiring diagrams, schematics, three-line drawings, wiring lists and part drawings.
Minimum 3 years supervisory skills.
Advanced knowledge of electrical principals and mechanical experience.
Advanced experience working with industry codes and standards and able to refer to applicable codes.
Proficient with the use of handheld test equipment such as multi meter, clamp-on meter, voltage detector, primary current and voltage test carts, hi-pot test cart, etc.
Ability to lead and train quality inspectors.
Ability to apply industry standards as applicable to job and product.
Ability to read and interpret electrical symbols, characters, and drawings.
Able to apply product knowledge and technical skills to aid in problem solving.
Basic computer skills using Oracle, Word, Excel, and Access
Ability to answer technical questions from shop, inspectors, and customers.
Advanced ability to interact on a regular basis with shop, inspection, engineering, sales and shipping personnel.

Must be proficient in the English language, both written and verbal.
Knowledge of IEEE standards for Circuit Breakers, Switchgear, Switches and Transformers applicable to Powell equipment.
Knowledge of NEMA standards applicable to Powell equipment.
Knowledge of National Electric Code as applicable to Powell equipment.
Basic understanding of power system and relay applications as applied to products.
Innovative to improve existing products.
Outdoor/Indoor construction/manufacturing environment primarily temperature controlled. Exposed to electrical, noise, cut hazards etc.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (i.e., arc flash, safety shoes, hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection) as required.
Must be able to work on platform ladders and other elevated work surfaces at heights greater than four feet.
Able to maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs or step ladders
Must stand and place body in delicate positions for extended periods of time.
Required to use upper extremities frequently, work with both arms above and below shoulders and use both arms at full length frequently.
Must be able to meet physical lifting demand up to 50lbs.
