MD Anderson Cancer Center Director, Research Infrastructure Development in Houston, Texas
The mission of The University of Texas M. D. In collaboration with the AVP Research Strategy & Operations, the Office of the Chief Scientific Officer and Facilities leadership, this individual serves as the administrative leader for all research space and properties in support of the mission of MD Anderson Cancer Center including design, construction, research equipment requests/purchases, maintenance and operations, and alteration and modernization of research spaces. Partnering with their executive partners, assists in executing the provisions of all facilities services for assigned facilities including space administration, facilities planning, project management, and facilities operations. Under the direction of the Associate Vice President Research Strategy & Operations and in alignment with the Chief Scientific Officer, this leader ensures that appropriate strategies are in alignment with key stakeholders to achieve institutional, programmatic priorities and objectives. Develops and maintains collegial and collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders across the institution and encourages a comprehensive approach to problem solving that links together all areas.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Under the direction of subject matter experts, partners with research operations and facilities leaders to direct internal and external planners, architects, designers, and engineers in the development of capital projects across the research enterprise.
Benchmarks and gleans insight regarding research facilities from peer institutions across the nation and globe.
Partners with stakeholders to provide effective oversight of the multi-year plan to accomplish the transformation of the research enterprise and ensures high-performance operational support and infrastructure.
Ensures the execution of the Research Master Facilities Framework including SCRB5, BRF and Bastrop. Manages space utilization and develops space neighborhoods to maximize impact.
Implements research space policy guidelines utilizing metrics to support transparent and consistent decision-making.
Develops the research framework of the future with the appropriate blend of faculty, classified researchers (cores/platforms) and trainees housed in organizational units with high quality support.
Oversees research space and serves as the advocate for research operations in major renovations and new construction. Directs redevelopment planning, infrastructure functional programming, construction quality control, activation, compliance, and sustainability. Assists in the development of strategic project planning for sustainable facilities.
Responsible for ensuring appropriate processes are developed for capital equipment purchases that will have impact on facilities. Evaluates requests for laboratory moves for new faculty hires and evaluation of move expenses to ensure stewardship of resources.
In partnership with subject matter experts, leads the development of capital and non-capital projects to enable research spaces and properties to meet current and future needs. Streamlines decision making for construction projects across research operations. Ensure research operational planning and research facilities account for sustainability and high reliability operations.
Maintains an ongoing level of education in facilities management, research operations, and strategic planning. In addition, provides the resources necessary to invest in the growth of others.
Serves as a representative for the Chief Scientific Officer and Research Strategy & Operations on Incident Command, EPAC, Research Space Planning meetings, Core team meetings, and other task forces or routine/ad-hoc meetings, as requested.
EDUCATION
Required: PhD Natural sciences or related field
EXPERIENCE
Required: Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the management of research operations or facilities in an academic medical center, to include five (5) years of supervisory experience. Management experience must reflect expansion of role, scope and complexity over time.
Preferred: Seven or more years of experience as a Facilities Manager in a research environment, including a minimum of five years supervisory experience. Management experience must reflect expansion of role, scope and complexity over time.
