Job Description Summary

The General Manager of Mont Ripley ski area is a highly collaborative, innovative, and professional business leader responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight for all aspects of the Mont Ripley experience for the 40,000 annual visits.

Functions and sub-departments under the direction of the General Manager include guest services, lift operations, ski school and University P.E. classes, rentals and retail operations, mountain operations, sales and marketing, land management, and financial management of over $1.3 million in annual revenue.

The General Manager performs all duties with a commitment to the highest level of customer service and total satisfaction of all customers, including transforming the learning and recreation experiences for Michigan Tech students, welcoming all users, and creating a sense of belonging.

Mont Ripley opened in 1933 as the first ski area in Michigan, and has been part of Michigan Technological University since 1945. Features of Mont Ripley at Michigan Tech include:

● Received revenue from Michigan Tech’s Experience Tech Fee that gives students access to Mont Ripley

● Active Ski Patrol since 1936; founding members of the National Ski Patrol

● 112 Acres of Skiable Terrain with 440’ Vertical Drop

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Provide leadership, management, and strategic oversight in all aspects of the department, ensuring service excellence for stakeholders while maintaining compliance with all applicable University, state, and federal safety regulations related to Ski Area operations.

● Prioritize safety protocols, implement risk management strategies, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Ensure that all staff are trained and apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

● Ensure the hiring, training, supervision, and scheduling of staff in all areas of the operation. Develop people in the delivery of excellent service and financial results through training, supervision, and evaluation.

● Develop long-range, annual business, fundraising, and capital plans.

● As an auxiliary operation of the University, manage departmental finances to attain a self-supporting and sustainable operation. Create strategies to develop reserves.

● Responsible for the development and preparation of budgets, including forecasting and reviewing all facility revenues and expenses on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis.

● Manage and oversee all accounting, inventories, financial procedures, cash flow, and establish controls to safeguard funds and assets.

● Create a schedule and funding model for light and heavy equipment maintenance, replacement, and expansion of inventory.

● Maintain an inventory and record of the current condition of rental and retail assets and plan for scheduled replacement and acquisition of items for resale.

● Conduct an annual review of season and daily pass rates, and rental equipment rates and make recommendations for adjustments. Forecast the impact of rates on the next year’s revenue.

● Develop and oversee ski school and lesson offerings for patrons including after-school programs and University P.E. classes.

● Oversee daily operations, working a variable schedule including early mornings, late evenings, and weekends as needed, particularly during the winter season.

● Oversee the creation and implementation of a departmental communications plan including, but not limited to, website updates, social media, maps, and systems for assessment and receiving customer satisfaction feedback.

● Maintain strong relationships and frequent communication with the Mont Ripley Ski Patrol, the Department of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology, Facilities Management, Dining Services, Financial Services and Operations, Human Resources, Environmental Health and Safety, competitive race organizations, Michigan Tech student organizations, and other campus and community stakeholders in support of Mont Ripley’s operation.

● Participate in the Associate Vice President for Administration’s (AVPA) Core Leadership Team and collaborate effectively with other AVPA unit leaders to ensure alignment of goals, leverage resources, share best practices, and foster cross-functional teamwork.

● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives including Lean Systems Training.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Associate’s Degree in Ski Area Management, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience to an Associate’s Degree.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Three years experience working in the ski industry

● One year experience in a Ski Area management role, including responsibilities for hiring, training, complaint resolution, and financial performance.

● Basic knowledge of technology sufficient to create and edit documents and worksheets, manage calendars, manage document storage, and produce reports and analyses in Microsoft and Google applications, web-based applications, and other software applications using a personal computer.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Bachelor’s Degree in Ski Area Management, Business, Public Administration, Recreation Management, resource or conservation management, or a related field.

● Ski Patrol Experience

● Experience working in Higher Education

● Experience teaching skiing or snowboarding, including any applicable certifications

● Snowmaking system design and snowmaking management experience

● Heavy equipment operator

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Understanding of all aspects of ski area operations including lifts, trails, snowmaking, grooming, and facilities maintenance.

● Familiarity with ski area technology and equipment, such as ski lifts, snowmaking systems, grooming machinery, and ticketing systems.

● Ability to prioritize safety protocols, implement risk management strategies, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.

● Proficiency in budgeting, financial planning, and cost control measures to optimize revenue streams and manage expenses effectively.

● Strong leadership skills to motivate and manage diverse teams including ski patrol, instructors, guest services, and maintenance staff.

● Commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences through excellent customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.

● Knowledge of marketing strategies to attract visitors, promote events, and enhance the ski area's reputation within the community and among tourists.

● Understanding of environmental sustainability practices related to ski area operations, including waste management, energy conservation, and ecological preservation.

● Ability to identify opportunities for improving guest experiences through amenities, services, and infrastructure enhancements.

● Capacity to develop long-term strategic plans aligned with organizational goals, market trends, and industry developments.

● Aptitude for building positive relationships with stakeholders including local communities, government agencies, suppliers, and partner organizations.

● Flexibility to respond effectively to changing weather conditions, market dynamics, and operational challenges, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

● Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards governing ski area operations, including safety, environmental, and labor regulations.

● Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey information to staff, guests, and stakeholders.

● Genuine enthusiasm for skiing and outdoor recreation, coupled with a commitment to promoting the sport and preserving the natural environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Knowledge of supply chain for heavy equipment and lift parts and maintenance and ability to source hard-to-find parts for out-of-manufacture equipment.

● Knowledge of Lean practices and continuous improvement tools

● Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
