Job Description Summary

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion provides Michigan Tech students with a place to call home—creating connections, a sense of belonging, and a supportive environment where all students are welcome. The Director plays a pivotal role by initiating and leading activities that engage and support students of all backgrounds, including our underrepresented, neurodiverse, and LGBTQ+ students. The Director works collaboratively with colleagues in the Division of Student Affairs and across campus to provide sustained, evidence-based programming and services to help our Huskies achieve their educational and life goals and persist through graduation and beyond.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

Examples of the core functional and position-specific duties:

  • Provide direction and maintain daily operations of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion(CDI) including student services and programs such as the Michigan College/University Partnership (MiCUP) program, Husky Connect, National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME), and cultural/heritage programming.

  • Lead and plan strategic efforts designed to enhance student development and learning, as well as advance the University’s goal to “Foster and support an exceptional and diverse community of students, faculty, and staff”.

  • Supervise, evaluate, and provide professional development for full-time staff, staff assistants, and student employees.

  • Develop and manage grant proposals and subsequent reports for state, federal, and/or corporate/foundation funding opportunities that promote and support the work of the CDI.

  • Serve as the financial manager including balancing budgets and providing monthly projections for both general fund and grant funded programs.

  • Provide support and guidance for identity-based registered student organizations associated with CDI.

  • Support individual students on issues of diversity awareness, and work collaboratively with colleagues in Student Affairs and across campus to weave diversity education and training into the fabric of existing and new programs.

  • Promote dialogue and facilitate interaction among groups across campus that leads to openness, engagement, and an understanding of diverse perspectives.

  • Promote cultural literacy among students through programs such as heritage month activities, celebratory events, or educational programming to improve understanding of diversity.

  • Initiate, articulate, and implement services and programming with University departments, community colleges, high schools, and industry/corporate partners to provide academic, professional, and financial support for Michigan Tech’s underrepresented students.

  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures, newsletters, brochures, web pages, etc. that relate to the mission of the CDI.

  • Monitor student trends and issues and continually assess the nature and effectiveness of the CDI’s programs, events and services to make ongoing improvements.

  • Participate and actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives and strategies and apply knowledge to everyday work.

  • Actively engage in creating an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors.

  • Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Examples of the additional duties and responsibilities for all Student Affairs non-union staff:

  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to ensure that services delivered to students are audience-specific, timely, culturally-relevant, needs-based, aligned with leadership’s priorities and student learning outcomes, and can be evaluated.

  • Leverage relevant social media platforms and other marketing and outreach strategies to promote and increase attendance at events and services.

  • Identify and propose appropriate professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.

  • Collaborate with supervisor and division leadership to enhance the visibility of Student Affairs achievements by, for example, exploring and submitting proposals to conferences to showcase effective programs that may be replicated within the profession.

  • Develop, propose, and manage approved programming and/or service delivery budgets based on data and event requirements.

  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate approved and assigned student employees.

  • Assist with collecting program data and other evidence to better understand student needs, student learning, and programmatic formative and summative outcomes.

  • Ensure that record-keeping systems are updated, accurate, and audit-ready.

  • Submit monthly, annual, and ad hoc productivity reports.

  • Perform other mission-critical and position-specific duties as requested based on operational needs (e.g., all-hands-on-deck events such as orientation, welcome week, homecoming, commencement, and other university traditions)

  • Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master’s degree in higher education administration, college student personnel, or related field, or the equivalent combination of military, education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience in higher education student affairs or related field.

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.

  • Demonstrated experiences developing and managing recruitment and/or retention-based programs for students.

  • Demonstrated experience working with and knowledge and understanding of issues related to traditionally underserved and/or underrepresented populations.

  • Evidence of experience and knowledge with LGBTQ issues and the intersection of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Experience in college admissions, advising students, and advising student groups

  • Experience providing crisis intervention and referrals to appropriate campus and community resources.

  • Experience working at a STEM-focused institution.

  • Experience with grant development, writing, and reporting.

  • Demonstrated experience in assessment of educational outcomes.

  • Experience with program databases or software programs—e.g. Maxient, Civitas—used to track, monitor, and report services to students.

  • Demonstrated ability to use judgment when dealing with confidential information.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues related to first generation low income students.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Communication skills: Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Self-management skills: ability to manage time effectively, learn and contribute to overall departmental tasks and goals.

  • Project coordination skills: ability to lead or contribute to planning or organizing projects, programs, services, etc.

  • Conflict resolution skills: ability to use interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive professional relationships and resolve conflict in a team environment and with individuals from various diverse backgrounds and experiences.

  • Analytical skills: ability to analyze information and offer sound recommendations.

  • Computational skills: ability to perform basic mathematical computations to assist with financial operations and/or data collection, analysis, and reporting.

  • Computer skills: proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software, preferably Microsoft Office or Google Suite.

  • Ability to function effectively and make sound decisions in stressful and crisis situations.

  • Ability to handle multiple projects, services, activities, etc. in a timely and professional manner in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment.

  • Ability to promote and achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion of multi-racial/ethnic, low-income, LGBTQ+, veteran, non-traditional, online, disability, first-generation, and others.

  • Ability to be flexible, diplomatic, patient, service-driven, and a self-starter.

  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision and in teams.

  • Ability to make reasoned administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive and confidential issues.

  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours based on operational need.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in working with neurodiverse students.

  • Knowledge of student development theories, learning theories, and other theories related to profession.

  • Knowledge of generational college students and the ability to design generation- and audience-specific programs/events/services.

  • Ability to plan and execute programs and services based on social justice, cultural responsiveness, anti-racism, and civility.

  • Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
