Hot Springs City Water / Wastewater Maintenance Operator (Full-Time) in Hot Springs, South Dakota

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment and tools in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City of Hot Springs water supply, distribution, or wastewater treatment facilities and systems. May also be assigned to provide public works maintenance support work in other public works areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs and assists in a wide variety of routine, sometimes heavy, skilled and semi-skilled duties related to the installation, operation, and maintenance of water mains, valves, services, meters, hydrants, and other water supply and distribution system facilities at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly and in conformance with all Federal and State requirements and operating permit conditions
  2. Assists in maintaining water quality by taking water samples and maintaining proper operation of water treatment equipment
  3. Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activities, water supply, treatment, distribution, and consumption
  4. Reads and interprets water system maps, blueprints, and USA marking requests, and marks all underground service alert requests
  5. Responds to service calls regarding water quality, pressure and leaks. Operates leak detection devices and pipe locating equipment. Inspects water meters and backflow devises for proper operations
  6. Cleans and maintains all equipment and tools related to work on both the job site, equipment and cooperation yard.
  7. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards
  8. Sets up traffic control, reads and understands traffic control plans, and can safely direct and route traffic around and trough work sites
  9. Operates and maintains a variety of equipment, and tools including tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, compactors, concrete saws, jackhammers, chainsaws, compressors and numerous other types of light duty construction equipment and tools
  10. Performs related duties as required

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Valid SD driver's license; Class B CDL with tank endorsement preferred or ability to obtain license upon hire
  2. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and
  3. Two (2) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair or any equivalent combination of education or experience

Necessary knowledge, skills and abilities

  1. Methods, techniques, and tools used in the construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater treatment systems.
  2. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices including necessary OSHA regulations and Department of Public Health regulations.
  3. Operation of equipment, vehicles, and tools commonly used in water construction, operation, and maintenance.
  4. Traffic laws and controls
  5. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite
  6. Safe worksite policies and procedures
  7. Understand, interpret, and apply general and specific administrative and departmental policies and procedures
  8. Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community

Work Hours/DAYS: Hourly position, 7:00AM4:00 PM M-F, additional weekend, holiday, night, overtime hours possible as determined by supervisor

[Wage: $15.74/ hour doe/q- ability to raise base rate $1 per certification up to amounts required to run City system

Certification Incentive: It is the policy of the City of Hot Springs to provide a $1/hr. wage increase upon receipt of DENR certification for the following certifications:]{color="#000000"}
