TITLE: Equipment Operator

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties
Performs semi-skilled to skilled work relative to the operation of specialized maintenance and
construction equipment.
Supervision Received
Works under close to general supervision of an administrative superior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Operates assigned equipment (sweeper, tractor, bushhog, chipper, flusher, vac-all, roller, distributor, bulldozer,
loader, backhoe, grader, etc.) in the performance of duties related to the maintenance and construction of
various public works projects and activities; inspects equipment and makes minor adjustments or refers to Fleet
Services for service; rotates among various pieces of equipment as required; performs unskilled to semi-skilled
labor tasks during slack or seasonal periods or as required by workload; performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Working knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of specialized maintenance and
construction equipment; working knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in
equipment operation; working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety
precautions necessary in the operation of equipment; some knowledge of the geography of the city;
skill in the operation of a variety of types of specialized maintenance and construction equipment;
ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and follow
verbal and written instructions; ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
Education
High school graduation or equivalent.
Experience
At least three years in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment.
Substitution
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid CDL Class A with Tanker endorsement and a clean driving record.

Frequently stands, walks, talks and hears; occasionally sits; uses hands to handle objects; reaches with hands
and arms; stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, climbs or balances; specific vision requirements include close,
color, distance, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; occasionally required to lift up to
100 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud; works in high precarious places and near moving
