Provides direct patient care to neonate through geriatric patient populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment plan of care. Communicates with Surgeon and Anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition. Maintains surgical standards and acts as a patient safety advocate.

Job Results & Essential Function

Accurate and Timely Patient Care

  • Performs daily duties and complete in a timely manner in all services including, but not limited to: General surgery, Orthopedics, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, Endoscopy, GYN.

  • Ensures Pre-op Checklist is complete (H&P present, informed consent signed, test results present, surgical site identified, etc.) before patient is taken into surgical suite.

  • Verifies all information pertaining to patient and procedure before the cases begin and brings any discrepancies to the attention of the Surgeon and Anesthesiologist.

  • Follows all surgical standards, universal precautions, and departmental procedures for pre-op, intra-op, and post-op patient care.

  • Adapts nursing procedures to meet the needs for treatment of individual neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient.

  • Assures infection control standards are met through the use of precautions and aseptic technique.

  • Demonstrates ability to assess patient condition throughout the surgical continuum.

  • Demonstrates safe patient transfer to next care provider, reporting patient condition and needs. In the case of the Registered Nurse also being the recovery nurse, shall demonstrate PACU skills and education.

  • Assists with positioning patient for maximum surgical exposure and correct/safe anatomical patient positioning.

  • Demonstrates appropriate priority development in performing circulating duties including emergency situations.

  • Properly opens sterile items and transfers them correctly to sterile field

  • Correctly pours sterile solutions to the sterile field ensuring all medication/solutions are labeled.

  • Performs and documents all surgical counts as per standards and procedures.

  • Oversees the flash sterilization of items insuring sterility with the process parameters, documentation, and transfer of those items to the sterile field.

  • Properly handles, documents, and labels all surgical specimens and cultures.

  • Demonstrates proper ordering, handling, and administration of blood products and blood work.

  • Continuously monitors the environment of the surgical patient and health care team, making adjustments when needed.

  • Initiates corrective action if surgical counts are incorrect/ or other incidents.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to safely operate mechanical, electrical, and powered equipment according to manufacturer's instructions.

Documentation

  • Accurately completes all pre-op, intra-op, and post-op records, patient progress notes and charges.

  • Assessment and reassessment of the patient is clearly and concisely communicated in charting.

  • Documentation meets current standards, policies and procedures and is completed within shift.

  • Participates in department and/or system wide team dynamic initiatives.

  • Provides day-to-day support of workflow within the work unit; including disseminating information, assigning staff to cover for absences, providing technical assistance, answering questions and resolving problems as directed by the Supervisor of Clinical Support.

  • Acts as a team player and works collaboratively within the team and organization.

  • Assists with developing priorities, goals, and action plans.

  • Responds to requests from Clinical Supervisor.

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assist with evaluation of programs and services.

  • Utilizes understanding of regulatory requirements to identify ways to improve process quality and compliance.

Requirements

Education & Experience

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York, and one year of OR experience preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

  • Current RN License

  • Basic Life Support Certification

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification

  • Pediatric Life Support (PALS) within 6 months

Skills

  • Demonstrates knowledge of anesthetic drugs, actions and side effects.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of arterial lines, Swan-Ganz, spinal and epidural catheters and how to document appropriately.

  • Meets the mandatory standard for yearly competencies.

Physical Demands:Ability to move or transfer patients with an individual effort equal to 50 lbs. Nurses should have a full range of body motion to successfully perform all essential functions of the job, meaning you’ll have to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch and reach frequently during shift. Hours of work may vary; on call is required.

Mental Demands:Ability to function during stressful medical emergencies calmly and efficiently. Ability to plan and revise care of the surgical patient according to their needs.

Interactions:Internal and external customers, Physicians and co-workers.

Working Conditions:Potential for exposure to infectious pathogens, physical hazards, cold or heated conditions. Personal protective equipment is available to all team members. Hours of work may vary, on call is required.

Hazards:May encounter exposure to chemical toxins, human blood and tissue, crowded work areas, Electrical equipment, communicable diseases and related medical waste.
