Jennie Stuart Medical Center, Inc. Surgery Certified First Assistant-Full Time in Hopkinsville, Kentucky

To act in the role of the surgeon’s first assistant. The Surgical First Assistant is knowledgeable and handles the instruments, supplies and equipment used to perform a surgical procedure. The Surgical First Assist may perform specific surgical tasks under “professional supervision”, to include but not limited to: opening and closing surgical sites, exposure of the surgical site, harvesting grafts, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, implanting devices, and altering tissue. The surgical first Assist may apply and remove splints/casts, insert foley catheters, IV’s, and arterial lines. The Surgical First Assist may administer local anesthesia and other such procedure as requested and necessary

Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and physiology/medical terminology for proper case preparation.

Secures equipment and supplies based on patient's needs.

Performs accurate sponge, sharp, and instrument counts consistent with policy and procedure.

Creates, maintains, and monitors and sterile field.

Constantly maintains an orderly instrument table/mayo and passes instruments and equipment as necessary to facilitate, without interruption.

Adheres to departmental policy and procedure and AORN standards in scrubbing, gowning, gloving, draping, and aseptic technique.

Applies proper principles of prepping patient for procedure.

Immediately removes/reports equipment/instruments that are broken or not safe for patient use.

Precepts/orients new personal and students.

Accepts and labels medications onto the sterile field according to policy.

Provides age specific care.

Regularly attends departmental meetings, asks questions, and remains informed.

Maintains open communication with physicians, peers, and leadership.

Actively assists and supports performance improvement activities.

Required SkillsRequired Experience

Certified Surgical Technician

Graduation from approved Surgical First Assist program, certification preferred.
