BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

JOB FUNCTION:

Strategically identifies maintenance work in compliance with the Predictive Maintenance (PdM) Program to ensure optimum equipment efficiency, availability, and reliability at all Company generating stations. Creates, executes, and maintains programmatic approach to PdM activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Predictive Maintenance Program & Strategy

  • Independently collects historical and real-time data on equipment utilizing PdM techniques and tools for component condition assessment. Utilizes innovative tools and techniques to collect and integrate data from various technologies and sources. Performs on-demand trouble shooting based on operational needs requiring travel between stations and other HECO facilities on limited notice.

    Condition Monitoring

  • Analyzes the available data on components in the PdM Program to assess component condition. Makes recommendations to craft, operations, management, and higher-level professionals for appropriate maintenance action when required. Directs or oversees these corrective maintenance actions when necessary. Documents findings and actions taken. Performs cost benefit analysis on program findings to capture savings.

    PdM Program Management

  • Develops, implements, documents, and tracks the performance of the Predictive Maintenance program. Continuously looks for ways to improve the effectiveness of the program via process/ hardware/ software improvements or modifications to the system/ component design. Keeps abreast of the latest developments in condition monitoring hardware/ software/ techniques and evaluate if cost effective to implement. Through a programmatic approach, works to improve the PdM Program using new/ updated technologies, techniques, processes, or efficiency improvements.

  • Demonstrates ownership of responsible technology by ensuring tools are calibrated and in working order, software is up-to-date, and any maintenance agreements are processed in a timely manner. Acts as the software administrator for applicable PdM related software. Ensures budgets are in-place to support applicable hardware/ software maintenance, new initiatives, and any training/ travel requirements.

  • Identifies the reason for equipment failure utilizing root cause failure analysis and troubleshooting skills; make recommendations to minimize or eliminate the mode or type of failure and prevent recurrence.

    PdM Business Acumen

  • Mentors, guides, and cross trains on different specialties. Provides guidance on the programmatic approach of PdM and reliability ensuring that the PdM Program continues in a state of continuous improvement.

  • Assists Field Crews and Supervisors with the technical maintenance service initiatives for the department. May be required to direct a single and/or multi-craft workforce to support Company values. Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce in support of quality initiatives.

  • Provides input to the department’s budget for tasks, projects, and resource allocation to meet PdM requirements. Evaluates the applicability of and procures new PdM technologies, equipment, and tools.

  • Communicates and interfaces effectively with all levels of employees. Continuously promotes the value, benefits, and impact of the Predictive Maintenance program. Facilitates meetings, provides trainings, and makes presentations.

  • Interacts with all employees and other internal and external suppliers and customers in a positive, supportive, and collaborative manner, to ensure the fulfillment of Company objectives.

  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    Knowledge Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of substation or power plant systems operation. Detailed knowledge of equipment function, operation, and maintenance for both mechanical and electrical equipment.

  • Detailed knowledge of the theory, principle and application of various condition monitoring technologies which includes any applicable hardware/tools and software.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PI Processbook/Vision including SAP.

  • Demonstrated detailed knowledge and understanding of the process and concepts regarding the PDM process, as well as, other areas such as Asset Strategy, Work Management, and Continuous Improvement.

  • Detailed understanding of root cause failure analysis process and techniques including investigations, team facilitation, and documentation.

  • General knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations and codes and working knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement contract, and company and department policies.

  • Good organizational, time management and planning skills with the demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate work within or outside of the group or be a productive team member when implementing the Predictive Maintenance decision making process.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to learn quickly when facing new technology or problems. Able to learn and apply new industry, company product or technical knowledge with ease.

  • Good analytical skills and the ability to analyze both successes and failures for continuous improvement and the ability to apply what was learned to new situations.

  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Ability to utilize reference materials, drawings, instruction manuals, and historical information.

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license to travel between stations on short notice. Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving experience in a related area utilizing innovation and initiative.

    Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited college or equivalent experience of journey person experience; preferably at the working foreman level or higher; or Extensive (8+ years) predictive maintenance (PDM) experience or directly related equivalent experience, and a high level of expertise in three or more of the following technologies/techniques:

  • vibration analysis

  • IR thermography

  • oil sampling and analysis

  • transformer fluid sampling and analysis

  • pump performance testing

  • dynamic balancing

  • electric motor testing

  • ultrasonic monitoring

  • generator partial discharge monitoring

  • generator flux probe monitoring

  • motion amplification

  • air in-leakage using helium tracer gas
