CNN is seeking an experienced, digital-first weather journalist or meteorologist to join its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong to help shape weather stories for the network, with strong focus on US weather news.
Working as part of the global Climate & Weather team, the successful candidate will serve as a vital bridge in CNN’s follow-the-sun operation to ensure consistent, multiplatform coverage throughout the US overnight hours.
The successful candidate thrives in the breakneck pace of extreme weather journalism and has strong news judgment, reporting and writing skills. This person is also a strong collaborator who can work with meteorologists, as well as breaking news reporters and correspondents around the world to help the CNN Climate & Weather team manage daily coverage of extreme weather and shape distinctive stories about one of the most urgent crises of our time.
This person will help keep the network sharp on daily weather priorities while also searching for stories that help illuminate and personalize the climate crisis — an issue that touches all of CNN’s audiences and journalistic beats.
The daily...
You will lead and manage the network’s weather editorial during US overnight hours, focusing on news and stories that resonate with the CNN audience.
This role is as much about writing as it is editing: You will work on the Climate & Weather team to write, assign and edit stories in the breaking news space, including urgent, rapidly updating digital coverage of hurricanes, tornado outbreaks, severe ice storms, life-threatening floods and more.
You will help the team gather editorial and shape coverage plans for all network platforms for major extreme weather events.
You’ll write and edit daily stories and news features; the stories you edit will come from your teammates in Climate & Weather, as well as reporters and correspondents elsewhere at CNN.
You’ll be comfortable moving between national and international weather priorities, with an eye on global audiences.
You’ll develop distinctive story ideas and angles around complex topics, serving as a partner to reporters, producers and weather anchors.
You’ll work with the visuals and video teams to help our audiences understand the impact of extreme weather and climate change through video (on-platform and social), data-rich graphics and photos.
You will occasionally develop weather visuals for TV and digital using CNN’s weather graphics platforms.
You’ll write and edit in formats that go beyond the traditional article — including short updates for digital live stories; visual projects; explanatory work that helps audiences understand the news.
Last but never least: Editors are often the final eyes on a story before it gets distributed to millions of people worldwide; all news editors work intently to make sure our stories are accurate and fair so that we continue to grow the trust between CNN and our audience.
Qualifications and experience...
At least 5 years of digital editorial experience in extreme weather or climate, with a degree in meteorology, climate science or a related field preferred (but not required)
A passion for weather, climate and science and a deep knowledge of US weather
A proven track record of writing and editing fast-moving breaking news; excellent weather and climate news judgment
Compelling pitching and headline instincts that help our audience connect with the news
Experience helping reporters, producers and meteorologists frame their stories for a national audience
Some experience with weather data and visualizations
Perfect grasp of written and spoken English
Exceptional communication and organizational skills
A college degree or equivalent
