Job Summary

The Technical Training Officer, Engineering, Welding is responsible for training Engineering employees in welding programs, including basic track welding, advanced track welding, thermite welding, and structural Bridges and Structures (B&S) welding. The incumbent is required to train, mentor, coach and qualify employees on various techniques related to frog and switch track welding, rail grinding, thermite welding, and structural welding. The role maintains facility equipment, job aids and scheduled maintenance records.

Main Responsibilities

Training Delivery

· Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the creation and update of training materials

· Provide training to employees through classroom instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and training exercises

· Maintain an understanding of how to practically apply skills related to frog and switch track welding, rail grinding, thermite welding, and structural welding

· Maintain an understanding of how to practically apply the United States Rail Operating Rules (USROR) and On Track Safety (OTS) as they relate to Engineering employees and track protection

· Foster a culture of safety leadership to ensure the safety of all employees, operations, and the public

· Evaluate trainees’ ability to demonstrate tasks proficiency

· Administer and grade exams

· Complete performance and qualifying documents and ensure all training events are gathered in the Learning Management System (LMS)

Maintain and Upgrade Facility Equipment

· Assess functionality of tools and equipment for hands-on training components prior to training

· Repair all malfunctioning tools and equipment

· Maintain organization and cleanliness in the welding lab

Develop Comprehensive Training Plan

· Collaborate with Managers and Senior Managers to resolve and identify functional training needs

· Develop training delivery plan

· Establish training delivery schedule designed to meet training needs

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work night shifts and weekends when necessary. The role requires minimal travel (25%) to carry out field training and quality audits.

Requirements

Experience

Engineering Track Construction and Maintenance

· Between 5 to 10 years of engineering track construction and maintenance experience with a strong track welding background (e.g., frog, switch, and thermite welding)

o Experience as a Welder

o Experience as a Track Supervisor or Rail and Quality Supervisor*

*Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

· High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)

· Qualified as a Track Welder

· Qualified in Track Inspection Guidelines

· Valid Driver’s Licence

· Any additional education in Engineering or other related field such as Physics or Mathematics*

Technical Skills/Knowledge

· Strong knowledge of CN’s Engineering Track department and field operations, specifically related to welding

· Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

· Fluently both written and verbal in English

· Knowledge of Systems Applications and Products (SAP), Track Inspection System (TIS) and LMS*
