Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Engineering Advanced Technology Development is responsible for the sourcing, evaluation, deployment, and day-to-day operations of CN’s suite of operational technologies for the Engineering department. The role is accountable for fostering a forward-looking approach with respect to technological innovations and enabling CN’s Engineering team to be the industry leader in applying technology to solve business challenges. The incumbent develops processes, technologies, strategy, and multi-year roadmaps for Engineering. The role ensures successful project planning, delivery, and execution, and allocates resources to activities that generate the highest business value for CN. In addition, the role oversees the day-to-day deployment of specific assets including heavy geo-inspection cars to ensure compliance with both internal and regulatory requirements.

Main Responsibilities

New Technology Development and Operationalization

· Handle and oversee business partners and stakeholders to create project plans, budgets, scope definition, timelines, outcomes, and deliverables

· Ensure oversight and coordination of dependencies across Engineering and Information and Technology (I&T) project portfolio, resolve and escalate conflicts

· Maintain a short- and long-term portfolio view of priorities and create an innovation pipeline to reduce capital and operating expense

· Provide portfolio progress updates, including risk assessment, to senior executive leadership

· Ensure accuracy in financial data, progress of build, capacity planning, adoption, and benefit realization of portfolio projects

· Undertake regular reviews to confirm that the portfolio remains on course to deliver desired strategic benefits and outcomes

· Assist leadership in strategy development for meeting portfolio goals including assessing and recommending plans to meet short- and long-term goals

· Lead multi-disciplinary teams (e.g. Field, Back-office Systems, and Technology Deployment) in the deployment and operationalization of technology to drive business outcomes

· Lead change management for technology adoption by impacted stakeholders and business partners

· Work with regulators to adopt advancements in technology and receive regulatory approval for use

· Work with Engineering Standards to ensure the creation of appropriate technical documentation and standards to guide field implementation and use

· Lead and work with industry to gain support and influence direction of technology adoption in railway

· Oversee the day to day operations of CNs Geometry Testing Fleet which includes 2 staffed cars and 10 Autonomous Track Inspection Cars (ATIP)

· Ensure that Geometry testing is undertaken to ensure compliance with both CN and regulatory requirements

· Ensure operating and capital budget compliance

· Plan and execute regular maintenance and other repairs as required to ensure cars are in good working order

· Provide oversight related to quality of testing and safety rules compliance

· Work with Transportation and Regional Engineering teams to build and execute testing schedules

New Technology Roadmap

· Work with senior Engineering management to identify and document business and technical challenges and opportunities

· Engage with internal and external stakeholders to explore technology innovation ideas, new research and methods, that can solve key business challenges within the engineering team

· Establish an overall technology strategy and roadmap with respect to emerging technologies and their applications at CN

· Engage with academia and keep abreast of emerging methodologies to resolve and identify business value and application

· Conduct cost-benefit and value proposition analyses for new and emerging technologies

· Collaborate with industry professionals to define gaps in technology and current processes to implement new service offerings for use of new technologies

Working Conditions

The role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various types of weather and environmental conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work weekends when necessary. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences and railway disruptions. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The role requires occasional travel (30%) across the United States (U.S.) and Canada to carry out field visits, engage with partners and suppliers.

Relevant work experience

· Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience

· Minimum 2 years of work experience in a managerial role or leading individuals in a matrix

o Experience in data sciences and research

o Experience in technology development, maturity and deployment to market

o Experience running multiple complex projects simultaneously

o Experience advising senior executives*

o Experience at CN*

Education/Certification/Designation

· Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Data Sciences, Statistics, Business, Commerce, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, or equivalent

· Master’s Degree in a related field*
