JOB SUMMARY

The position involves performing skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other standard equipment used in street maintenance, and construction activities, employing standard trade practices and procedures well established in automotive repair shops and to repair and maintain vehicles in County fleet.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Repairs and reconditions automobiles, trucks, tractors, light equipment, snowplows, compressors, pumps, marine motors and maintenance equipment.
  • Tunes engines, grinds valves; sets tappets and push rods; replaces or repairs main or connecting rod bearings; inspects and repairs transmissions, universal joints and differentials; installs emergency equipment; repairs and adjusts lights, carburetors and brakes; balances and aligns wheels; repairs armatures, generators and starters; and checks and repairs bodies and fenders.
  • Makes service calls, as needed.
  • Keeps shop and repair records including time reports; prepares part orders and records of job orders; and determines need for parts and supplies.
  • Operates diagnostic electronic testing equipment in order to discover mechanical problems and to service vehicles equipped with complex pollution control systems.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Two (2) years of related experience;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • State Inspection License.
  • Valid Class E State Drivers License.

Special Requirements:

  • Some situations will require early morning or late evening hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all mechanical hand tools and testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard garage materials and parts.
  • Knowledge of standard garage shop practices and techniques, occupational hazards and applicable precautionary measures.
  • Skill in the use of tools and the operation of the machines and equipment employed in motor repair and adjustment.
  • Skill and ability to work from oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to locate and adjust mechanical feedback in motors and equipment and make necessary repairs.
  • Ability to weld and perform simple metal working operations.
  • Ability to make work activity reports.
  • Ability to use and understand automotive manuals.
  • Ability to establish regular maintenance and upkeep schedule for County fleet of vehicles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The work also requires mental and visual acuity, speaking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling; picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand; grasping; picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand; hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed in a vehicle service shop environment, with petroleum, gasoline and other chemical vapors where the noise level is usually loud and occasionally works in high, precarious places, near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The work may occasionally be performed outdoors in various weather conditions of below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, mud, rain, snow, sleet, wet and/or humid conditions and vibration, and some exposure to direct sunlight. This position involves interaction with other employees and the general public.
