ITW Senior Mechanical Engineer - Thermal in High Wycombe, United Kingdom

This position will be based at our European headquarters in High Wycombe, UK.

Responsible for the design, manufacture and support of standard and custom thermal products, including supporting operations of the thermal product manufacturing cell and support of legacy products. Aiding the T&T products manager with the development of business strategies with the aim to enable growth of thermal business revenue through the use of data analysis, efficiency projects and other business management tools.

Managing projects to develop bespoke products and accessories to meet the testing needs of our customers not covered by our standard catalogue, with a focus on chambers & furnaces for materials testing at above and below ambient temperatures (Thermal Products). Leadership of type 0 (custom to standard) and operational engineering projects.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Development of high quality, custom thermal products sold into a regulated environment

  • Collaborate as a team member on multi-functional project teams, across multiple projects to deliver in a fastmoving development environment

  • Providing technical leadership for thermal products and operations staff in conjunction with the operations manager

  • Developing project requirements based on appropriate technology using inputs from internal and external stakeholders including, collaborators and customers that is consistent, complete, correct, and operationally defined

  • Acting as the focal point for thermal products and ensuring effective communication with other departments in High Wycombe, Norwood and relevant stakeholders

  • Estimating tasks and executing work packages within defined scope and budget

  • Develop and define product tests, simulate, test & record results to verify the system / sub system requirements have been met

  • Create and improve system proposals for our existing and new customers

  • Detailed mechanical design (using CAD)

  • Analyse current and historical data to help reduce costs and improve the quality of the thermal product line and help identify focus areas within the department to improve overall financial metrics

  • Responsible for examining, planning and deciding whether to execute high risk opportunities for incoming project enquiries and department growth

  • Ensuring all designs and activities adhere to necessary technical and safety requirements, including project team activities and the development of appropriate risk assesments

  • Leading project teams to achieve project aims

  • Planning, budgeting, organisation, execution and control of projects

  • Occasional visits to Customer sites, where required, to assist in the commissioning of thermal products

  • Managing and supporting Type 0, CPS, ESC, QSR, ESR, MRB and ECO activities so that quality, manufacturability and servicablity goals are achieved and lead times are met.

  • Supporting operations to deliver products in accordance with our customer experience framework.

Key Competencies (includes skills)

  • High level of experience in project management

  • Well founded knowledge of manufacturing methods and technology including production equipment, manufacturing and design processes.

  • Process improvement skills including a good understanding of ITW business strategy (e.g. FTB, PLS, 80/20)Demonstrated experience leading and participating in structured product design engineering methodologies

  • Leadership skills including the ability to motivate and direct team members contributing to a project

  • The judgement necessary to choose the best solution to a complex problem

  • Awareness of emerging trends and developments in relevant technologies

  • Ability to generate theoretical and practical mechanical designs supported by technical calculations.

  • Good knowledge of design, component selection, mechanical stress analysis and experimental methods of determining sound designs.

  • High competency CAD user.

  • Ability to inter-relate with other disciplines.

  • Ability to design for quality, performance, manufacturability, serviceability, reliability and cost-effectiveness.

  • Experience of using product life cycle management, enterprise resource planning and product data management software systems.

  • Awareness of modelling, test & reference requirements and systems integration.

Qualifications

Degree level+ or equivalent with proven competence and appropriate postgraduate experience

Key KPIs/other performance measurements

• Project Delivery metrics (Safety, On-time, Budget & Quality).

• Thermal operations performance metrics

Normal office, factory and WFH environment. Travel to customer sites as required (local and international).
