NGG is the owner and operator of 3,860 MW of steam and combustion turbine units on Long Island. With a focus on safety, reliability, and efficiency, NGG operates as a fully integrated organization, providing operating and support services. Within NGG, the Power Engineering Department (PED) specializes in developing engineered solutions for the steam and combustion turbine units. PED works closely with power plant and support services personnel throughout the engineering and construction phases of specific projects. Additionally, PED actively participates in new project development, encompassing utility-scale battery storage, solar energy, and simple cycle combustion turbine generators. As a multi-disciplined team, PED engineers are self-directed, empowered, and take ownership of projects from inception to operation. The department prides itself on engineering innovative solutions, embracing new technologies, and fostering collaboration to deliver successful projects.

National Grid is hiring a Lead Electrical Engineer. The role will be located in our Hicksville, NY office

Job Purpose

The Lead Electrical Engineer, reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager in the Power Engineering Department (PED), will support and lead internal and external team members in collaborative efforts for new projects, regulatory compliance, and enhancements to the existing fleet of steam and gas turbine units on Long Island. This role encompasses performing technical, financial, and operational evaluations of electrical assets, evaluating project aspects from design to operations, and developing design, specifications, standards, and procedures.

Key Accountabilities

* Serve as the project manager and/or project engineer throughout the entire project lifecycle, including engineering, design, construction, and operation, for both existing generating assets and new energy development opportunities.
* Conduct comprehensive asset evaluations to determine maintenance and investment requirements.
* Perform safety, environmental, and financial risk analyses to ensure project viability.
* Develop accurate cost estimates, conduct benefit analyses, and assess risks for projects.
* Conduct engineering calculations and studies to support project scope and requirements.
* Develop specifications, standards, and procedures to ensure project compliance and quality.
* Provide technical evaluations for new energy development projects, including areas such as energy storage, solar, relay protection, and combustion turbines.
* Research and evaluate emerging technologies to identify their potential application in new projects and existing assets, aiming to provide enhanced value to customers and load serving entities.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
* NYS Professional Engineer (PE) license.
* Valid NYS Driver's License.
* Minimum 8 years of related experience.
* Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
* Experience with AutoCAD and electrical system modeling applications (e.g., SKM, ETAP).
* In-depth understanding of industry standards and regulations, including NFPA, NEMA, UL, IEEE, NERC, and NPCC.
* Proven leadership skills in effectively leading and managing both internal and external project teams.
* Energetic, creative, and committed to promoting innovative ideas and achieving objectives.
* Comfortable working in an ambiguous and changing environment.
* Demonstrated ability to perform technical analysis, troubleshoot electrical issues, and propose effective solutions.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple high-visibility projects.
* Strong knowledge of power generation systems, including generators, transformers, switchgear, and protection systems.
* Familiarity with energy storage systems, solar and wind power generation.
* Skilled in project cost/benefit and risk analysis.
* Excellent communication skills for effectively conveying technical designs and concepts.
* Ability to work in a matrix organization and deliver results.
* Capable of working in a power plant environment, recognizing hazards, and implementing safeguards.
* Willingness to stay updated with industry trends, advancements, and best practices in electrical engineering for power generation.

Salary

$145,000 - $170,000 a year

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
