CIVIL CLERK PISTOL PERMIT OFFICE M-F, 8A-4PM, $37,253/yr

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This is a civilian position in the Herkimer County Sheriffs Office, Civil Division. The incumbent is responsible for the administration of the process to obtain a New York State pistol permit. The work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Deputy, Undersheriff and the Sheriff with some leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative but not exhaustive):

Distributes, receives, reviews and processes pistol permit applications.

Amends pistol permit licenses by adding/disposing of hand guns, updating permit holder personal information, transferring current permits into/out of the County.

Maintains firearm database to track firearms taken in, released from and/or destroyed by the Sheriffs Office.

Maintain contact and communication with permit holders, gun dealers and various law enforcement agencies with regard to pistol permit procedures.

Examines and prepares completed applicant pistol permit folders for review by the Sheriff and County Court Judge.

Keeps records and prepares a variety of reports as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Ability to read and comprehend New York State Pistol Permit Laws and Regulations.

Ability to read, understand and interpret written material.

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with legal personnel, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and the general public;

Ability to prepare records and reports related to pistol permit matters;

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs;

Tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school, possession of a high school equivalency diploma, or a high school individual education plan diploma, AND Either

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associates Degree in paralegal studies or a closely related field;

Or:

(B) Two years of clerical experience in a law office or legal setting or experience processing civil documents;

Or:

(C) Four years of general clerical experience.
