KLJ Survey Technician - Seasonal in Helena, Montana

Description

We are seeking a Seasonal Survey Technician to support our surveying and civil engineering projects during peak seasons. This seasonal full-time position is ideal for individuals with experience or interest in land surveying, mapping, and data collection. The role involves assisting survey crews with fieldwork, operating survey equipment, and ensuring accurate data collection for engineering and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist surveyors in conducting land surveys for engineering, construction, and land development projects.
  • Operate and maintain survey equipment, including total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors.
  • Collect and document field data, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform construction staking, boundary surveys, and topographic mapping.
  • Assist in processing survey data using CAD software and other mapping tools.
  • Read and interpret survey plans, engineering drawings, and legal descriptions.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies while working in the field.
  • Maintain and transport survey equipment to job sites.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework in surveying, geomatics, or civil engineering is a plus.
  • Previous experience in land surveying, construction, or related fields (preferred but not required).
  • Familiarity with survey equipment and software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D (a plus).
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and rugged terrain.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (required for fieldwork).
Work Environment & Schedule:
  • Outdoor fieldwork in varying weather conditions, including construction sites and undeveloped land.
  • Requires physical activity such as walking long distances, standing for extended periods, and lifting equipment.
  • Seasonal position with potential for full-time employment based on performance and business needs.
  • Work schedule may vary depending on project demands, including occasional weekends or overtime.

Under direct supervision, provides survey support to the Resident Engineer on projects to ensure construction compliance with plans, specifications, and contract documents. Tasks may include assisting with and receiving training in performing land surveys and conducting research on various construction projects of basic complexity which may include visually mapping/drafting legal boundaries and the potential placement of structures, utilities, and installations. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for uniformity, thoroughness, and legal compliance for survey documents.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

* Under direct supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from property/utility records, deeds, land/property titles, structural plans, and other matrices for land surveying activities.

* Under direct supervision, use survey instruments to perform various types of property surveys on projects of basic complexity and/or scope, which could include boundary, existing condition, topographic, as-built, subdivision, and profile maps.

* Provides entry-level land surveying assistance that accounts for accurate survey data, and determines conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, boundaries, and construction specifications.

* Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications related to site observation and survey findings using photographs, sketches, calculations, software, spreadsheets, technical drawings, 2D/3D illustrations, and reports.

* Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, studies and surveys, and construction.

* Complete training on assigned tasks.

* Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to KLJ's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

* Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Qualifications:

* High School Diploma.

* General awareness of land survey principles, practices, process, methods, and techniques

* General awareness of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

* Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.

* Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.

* Ability to work independently under supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

* Basic proficiency with survey equipment (e.g. Leica Robotic Total Station), Auto Cad, Civil 3D, Microstation, and/or Geopak.

* Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical work week.

* Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Hours and Travel:

This position requires the individual work 40 or more hours per week with 10% of the time spent in the office and 90% in the field.
