Job Summary

Responsible for identification, control, and eradication of weeds and other ornamental pests on campus grounds areas. May be required to remove weeds by hand if needed. Other duties include applying fertilizer to shrubs, trees, and turf. This position is considered essential personnel and requires storm duty when needed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs routine weed inspections and treatments for the Hattiesburg campus. Schedules and safely apply herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to control weed and pest populations. Applies granular and liquid fertilizers to turf and ornamentals. Prepares and mixes chemicals according to specific formulas and regulations. Removes weeds mechanically and manually where needed.

  • Safely stores chemicals, supplies, and equipment. Keeps MSDS book up to date and accessible to all staff. Ensures all chemical storage, transportation and disposal follows regulations.

  • Follows established safety procedures including proper equipment calibration, PPE requirements, and equipment maintenance.

  • If needed mows, trims, blows, and cleans debris from grounds.

  • Keeps accurate records of all fertilizer and pesticide applications.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and one year of experience/training with grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, and spraying/handling pesticides. Valid driver's license required.

  • Ability to maintain records of materials, supplies, time, and work performed.

  • Ability to work successfully as a member of a team or alone with moderate supervision.

  • Ability to manage small crews for special projects.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse group of people.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

  • Skills in managing one's own time and the time of others if needed.

  • Skills in using mathematics to calculate pesticide rates.

  • Knowledge of herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and fertilizers, including their safe handling and application.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with a high attention to detail

  • Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.

  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of applicable equipment and tools.

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate from the State of Mississippi issued by the Department of Agriculture.
