Job Summary

Supervises, coordinates and participates in the construction of streets, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, patios and other related construction work. Provides supervision for the University Motor Pool and the associated staff. Serves as Superintendent in the absence of the Superintendent. This position is considered essential personnel and may require storm duty as well as, possible on-call duties.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coordinates and participates in all areas of work involving the Infrastructure and Transportation Services department, including, but not limited to, purchasing of parts and supplies, supervision and participation of vehicle maintenance, estimating project costs, and the construction and finishing of concrete related projects.

  • Inspects construction, maintenance and repair of drainage systems and reviews specifications for all projects for compliance and compatibility.

  • Ensures all sidewalks and sidewalk projects are safe and ADA compliant. Develops and implements repair plans for those not currently compliant or those deemed a hazard due to cracking, shifting or uplift.

  • Operates mini excavator, box blade, and bulldozers to gouge out, level, and distribute dirt and to push trees and rock from land for constructing roads, buildings, walks, handicap ramps, bike trails, and parking lots. Operates backhoe to open ditches for utility lines or pipes. Operates front end loader and dump truck to load and haul fill dirt to and from construction sites. Operates lull and fork lift to load and unload materials. Operate street sweepers to maintain a clean campus.

  • Assists in construction work by performing manual tasks that may include but not limited to finishing concrete, asphalt, gravel bases, installing street sign posts, posts and chains, concrete parking bumpers, and cleaning streets from leaves and debris.

  • Operates other mechanical devices on campus such as concrete saw, concrete grinder, wacker packer, post hole auger, pumps, jack hammer, compressors, and compactors.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School degree or GED and; three years’ experience required. Experience at an institution of higher learning is preferred. Valid Driver's License and Commercial Class D License.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedures.

  • Ability to designate assignments to employees and make sure the task are completed.

  • Ability to complete simple repairs and ability to help mechanics if necessary.

  • Ability to drive dump truck, tractors, sweepers, carts, university truck and trailers.

  • Ability to pick up tires, parts, vehicles, carts, etc. from dealerships and vendors.

  • Ability to repair potholes and roads using hot and cold patches of asphalt.

  • Knowledge of applicable safety requirements and the ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, traffic rules and regulations, construction maintenance, routine maintenance, repair, and operation of light and heavy equipment, including vehicles.

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.

  • Skill in managing ones’ own time and the time of others while completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.

  • Skill in the use and care of grounds-keeping hand tools and equipment, in the operation of motorized and gas-operated equipment, and in the repair and maintenance of sidewalks and parking lots.

  • Skill in material resources management through obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use and care of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.

  • Ability to perform maintenance, to follow instructions, and to interpret drawings and diagrams.
