City of Hattiesburg Code Enforcement Officer - Fire Prevention in Hattiesburg, Mississippi
Position: Code Enforcement Officer -- Fire Prevention Department: Fire Division: Fire Prevention
Rate of Pay: $16.00
Nature of Work: Performing tasks related to fire code enforcement, public education, commercial inspections, data entry, and other duties depending on certifications.
Examples of Work: • Enforce the City-adopted Fire Code. • Perform, manage, and/or assist with commercial inspections. • Participate in fire investigations. • Serve on-call to assist with fire emergencies including directing traffic. • Effectively communicate with other officers and/or agencies regarding inspections or investigations by verbal, written, and electronic means. • Organize and file paper and digital records. • Interact with the public in and out of the office on behalf of Fire Prevention. • Assist with other duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal or Fire Chief.
Qualifications: • High school diploma or GED equivalent. • Valid driver license. • Two (2) years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Data entry experience. • Familiarity with Microsoft Office. • Experience in pre-fire planning. • Experience in public education. • Experience in code enforcement. • Experience in fire cause and arson investigation. • Experience in firefighting (structural). • Certified in recognizing hazardous materials.
Training: • Within one (1) year of employment, inspectors MUST have attained the following certifications: Certified Fire Inspector (1031-1) and Certified Fire Inspector (1031-2). • This timeline may be subject to class availability. Failure to obtain both certifications within the required timeframe may result in termination of employment. Upon earning both certifications, Code Enforcement Officers will be eligible for incentive pay. Continuing eligibility requirements to retain this incentive include 48 hours of continuing education per year in inspection or investigation and meeting a quota of commercial inspections and/or investigations yearly, as determined by the Fire Marshal.
