Functional Description
American Express National Bank (AENB) is American Express’ chartered national bank. Headquartered in Utah, AENB is the single largest entity within American Express’ business, currently representing more than 50 percent of the company’s Card Member Spending, nearly 90 percent of its lending, and more than 60 percent of its of revenues.
American Express National Bank provides American Express’ customers with access to consistent payments, financing, and savings products in three ways, including:
Issuing and servicing charge and credit cards for the consumer and small business segments.
Offering commercial loans to small and midsized merchants, as well as installment loans to consumers.
Maintaining a Personal Savings program consisting of high-yield savings accounts and certificate of deposit products.
Colleagues across American Express’ key business divisions (known as “affiliates”) use their experience and skills to support AENB in completing its strategy. In addition, many of American Express’ executives also serve as officers of AENB. AENB is governed by its own Board of Directors. It is regulated, supervised, and examined by several regulatory agencies, including the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for wide-ranging safety and soundness and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for adherence to federal consumer financial laws. All AENB colleagues, officers, and affiliates have a long-standing commitment to driving strong and standardized risk management practices in accordance with the OCC’s Heightened Standards guidelines.
The Corporate Functions Control Management team within AENB will serve as the business unit Control Management function for several corporate groups including Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C); Colleague Experience Group (CEG), General Counsel’s Organization (GCO); Global Risk & Compliance (GRC); Enterprise Strategy (ES); and American Express National Bank Headquarters (AENB HQ).
The objective of the Corporate Functions Control Management Governance team is to establish the Operational Risk and Controls strategy for Corporate Functions, set up a foundational governance structure that ensures operational risks are identified, assessed, and managed in compliance with enterprise Operational Risk Management programs and reporting.
The Corporate Functions Control Management team is looking for an Analyst of Governance passionate about ensuring control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our organization. It will involve extensive collaboration with multiple partners across numerous business divisions, functional areas, and geographies.
The Corporate Functions Control Management team is looking for an Analyst of Governance, Reporting , passionate about ensuring control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our organization. It will involve extensive collaboration with multiple partners across numerous business divisions, functional areas, and geographies.
The Analyst will primarily be responsible for developing clear, consistent, comprehensive and accurate risk reporting for the Corporate Functions, including quantitative and qualitative thematic reporting, dashboards, insights and analytics. This Analyst will be adept at telling stories and communicating complex information to colleagues.
In addition, the Analyst will:
Track certain issues with KRI limits and risk appetite for Corporate Functions Control Management to ensure operational risks are managed within agreed thresholds
Support the implementation of parts of the operational risk framework to enable effective risk management and decision making in the BU
Assists in the development of portions of BU-specific procedures and additional standards (i.e., escalation protocols), related to the execution of the Operational Risk Management programs
Help facilitates the understanding and use of the risk governance framework basics across BUs through regular communication
Assist to aggregate basic level reporting, approvals/exceptions and support "change-the-function" activities for the BU
Support sharing insights, better practices, themes, etc. across the enterprise
Required Qualifications:
1-2 Years experience in operational risk management (e.g., within Risk and/or Internal Audit function) Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities
Project management, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards
Analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in finance, Business, Risk Management, or related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc) or certifications are advantageous
Experience in at least one of the following:
Translating operational risk strategy and appetite into execution guidelines
Tracking and identifying issues with Key Risk Indicator (KRI) limits and risk appetite to ensure operational risks are managed within agreed thresholds
Provide administrative support of implementing the operational risk governance frameworks
Supporting of creating, communicating and ensuring understanding and adherence to operational risk procedures and standards
Consolidating, analyzing, creating and presenting management reporting and dashboards
Executing and continuously optimizing processes for data intake, validation, communication, and delivery
