Overview of the Position

The position is part of the Middle & Large Commercial (MLC) Construction Actuarial pricing team supporting the Guaranteed Cost, Loss Sensitive, and Wrap Ups books of business. This position will work in close partnership with our Underwriting Divisions as well as Product, ERM, and IT departments.

* Please note, candidates pursuing exams as well as those not pursuing exams will be considered for this role. This role can be part of our Actuarial Student Program for an individual meeting requirements for entry into the program. *

Location

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement.  Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).   Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.

Responsibilities

As a key member of the MLC Construction Actuarial Team, this individual will perform a variety of Actuarial projects including core pricing work, development of new book monitoring insights, and enhancement of our segmentation model/rating tools.

Specific Examples include:

  • Work hand-in-hand with underwriters to craft account-specific insurance programs in Loss-Sensitive Construction and multi-year project-specific programs in Wrap Up Construction.

  • Update, maintain, and enhance the pricing tools used by underwriters

  • Advance Construction’s book monitoring capabilities by completing book management and book impact analyses, using the insights to better inform pricing decisions.

  • Own the Account Segmentation process and partner with underwriters to ensure the execution of the segmentation strategy.

  • Aid in and/or lead the analysis, selections, and communications of our core Actuarial work as needed, including Trend & LRP, Indications, Rate Filings, and Profitability Reporting.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree with a major in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, or related field of study.

  • Pursuing toward Associate/Fellowship designation preferred. Candidates with Actuarial experience but not pursuing exams will be considered for this opportunity.

  • Minimum 2+ years of Property and Casualty Insurance Actuarial experience.

  • Knowledge of Actuarial pricing techniques.

  • Very strong technical/analytical skills; High proficiency in Excel required and experience with R/SQL preferred.

  • General knowledge of Property and Casualty insurance operations.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Independently motivated; constantly looks for areas to add value.

  • Teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with and influence individuals at different organizational levels.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$80,000 - $150,000

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
