Position Purpose:

Must be able to excavate, repair, replace and maintain all aspects of Veolia's Harrisburg operation distribution system while keeping accurate records of all work done and communicating with all employees and departments. Handles multi-task position, may perform field customer service duties, and cross-trained to read meters in accordance with monthly reading schedule.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to learn the basic operation of a backhoe, (Backfilling, grading and excavating.)

  • Apply for and secure a CDL license within six months from time of hire.

  • Well versed in the use of tools, equipment, fittings and pipe used throughout the system. Using pipe wrenches, pipe saws, tubing cutters, valve keys, tapping machines and line crimpers to accomplish installations and repairs. (PVC, Cast Iron, Ductile Iron and Asbestos Cement mains and related fittings. Plastic and copper services and related fittings.)

  • Learn all aspects of service and main repair and installation including replacing and installing fire hydrants, main valves, sleeves, clamps etc. Repairing and installing domestic, commercial and fire line services and the use of related fittings and special tools involved in completing the above tasks. Working in leak repair situations where water is running and operating pumps, jackhammers and generators to accomplish timely repairs.

  • Must have the ability to read maps and locate valves (gate boxes and curb boxes) to perform shutdowns as needed on mains as well as services. Using locating devices to locate service lines and mains as well as curb boxes and gate boxes.

  • Must be able to learn job set-ups and oversee that the work being done is done in a safe, time effective, and quality manner.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Supervision and work in accordance with their input and instructions.

  • Perform flow tests, leak surveys, utility locates and water quality tests.

  • Perform valve maintenance.

  • Maintain good customer relations.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.

  • Backhoe operating experience preferred.

  • Basic understanding of the operation of a water distribution system.

  • Basic plumbing, mechanical and excavation knowledge skills are desired.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Good physical condition to be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to hand excavate and perform the various lifting, bending and carrying necessary in this position.

  • Knowledge of OSHA and Company safety policies.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public and fellow employees.

  • Perform job responsibilities with minimal supervision in a timely manner.

  • Possess strong technological skills such as using computers, iPad, and cell phones.

  • Possess strong written, verbal and radio communication skills.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and have the ability to acquire a CDL license in a reasonable amount of time.

  • Attain a working knowledge within 6 months of hire of the Transmission and Distribution field.
